Dave Crosby's World Tour, taking requests...

Hello All

Well not quite a world tour, but close enough at 2500 miles driving. I'll be setting off for a tour of the South's greatest railroads/museums next Monday and over the following two weeks will visit: Cass, The Durbin & Greenbrier, Roanoke, SRM Duluth, TVRM, Kennesaw Museum, Stone Mountain, Savannah, Tweetsie, Spencer and the New Hope Valley. Yes, I know, I'm bypassing GSMR and SCRM, but time and museum schedules will allow for only so much...

Any pieces of equipment anyone wants a current report about or shot of? I know Rob Davis has placed an order for the O&W 44 tonner in Duluth, anyone else?

It would be nice to see Shay #6 at Cass working on the hill. She was cold last summer when I was there for boiler inspection and/or flue job.

Noooo... But I did consider a journal type thing, maybe writing up the trip of a lifetime for RYPN with pictures if there's interest.

Actually, I can't really bust on you. I've been home from China for 4 months and haven't posted a brief yet!

Dave,

I am curious to know of the progress on Southern Railway Ks-1 2-8-0 630 (Alco 1904) and when a possible steam up date may be. I'm also curious what the current status of former Atlanta and West Point heavy 4-6-2 290 (Lima 1926) at the Southeastern Railway Musuem in Duluth is. As far as I last knew it was in storage unaccessable to the public. But any reports from your "world tour" will be welcome. Thanks and have a fun trip.

Last I saw A&WP 290 (2-3 years ago), she was on display at the new SERM site poised in one of the buildings with a string of passenger cars.

That was probably S&A 750 you remember. She has been on display in the main exhibit building since they opened at the new location. Back in May A&WP 290 was in the shop (Building 3) out of view of the public. Andrew D., can you give us an update on 290?

I hear Dollywood is pretty good. Yes, you have to enter the theme park to get there, but these are real NG engines, and working up a 5% grade is more excitement than you will get at most other places you visit perhaps!!! Just a thought. Also if they have no riders, you can get a cab ride pretty easily I am told. My brother has done it twice. He was just down there a month ago. Call ahead and make an arrangement with them. Its on the way from Tweetsie to TVRM anyway.

I've always had a love for theme park trains, but wasn't able to work Dollywood into the itinerary this time around.

So there's always next year's tour, in which i hope to see Dollywood, The Three Rivers Rambler, KRM and GSMR...

290 is still going back to gether(cosmetic only) and is housed in the museum's building 3, which is the shop. Unfortunatly the loco is to large to ever make it into the main exhibit hall....she just won't take the curves. According to builders specs she can take a 19 degree curve in normal operating conditions. Well, when as I was shifting her around during the move process her center driver was being pushed straight up in the air (from lateral force off of the inside rail) in only a 17-18 degree curve. The sharpest point on the journey to the main exhibit hall is around 20-21......do the math.

I recall the old turntable lead across the street. 290 sat on it and the tender handrail was touching the cab but not being deflected and you could not get a sheet of paper between.

The running gear is back together, still a good bit to do boiler wise. Most of it revolves around getting the lagging off. There will be a good deal of reassembly required once that's done. We WILL NOT bring her out of the house looking like a ragged park engine, missing half of her appliances! 290 has been temporarily backburnered until ex-Georgia Power 97 is ready to roll out, hopefully this spring.

I've done it on a busy day with a full train. I didn't even call ahead - I just walked up and asked. The crews there are very friendly.
