The drone footage that can be found at the link given for the photo gives a much better perspective of the dig site than the single photo. It sure is an intriguing quest. They have moved quite a bit of dirt and cleared a large area. I would think some definitive answers will be found pretty soon. Wish I understood Polish..........

Amused to see from one of the adverts on their page that someone has jumped on the bandwagon and has produced a "Gold Train" beer!

There seems to be confirmation, although the online translators don't handle Polish well:

Quote:
You probably have seen the inlet to the tunnel. - On both sides of the trench they appeared arches that look like inlet to the tunnel - confirms naszdziennikarz , who managed to enter the work area . The moment of discovery will be forwarded to the whole world?

This is pretty cool. I'm rooting for these guys, hoping they find something significant- whether or not it includes a train.

Apparently digging is suspended temporarily due to heavy rain. They are hoping to resume if the ground has dried out enough by Wednesday:

Meanwhile, photos posted indicate a large drilling rig has arrived on the site:

Looks like they are giving up digging according to this report on an Israeli news site

http://www.haaretz.com/world-news/europ ... m-1.738304

Nobody else seems to be reporting on this at the moment though.

Hmm, yesterday their website reported that they had stopped digging but would start drilling on Friday, after the ground had dried out sufficiently to allow the drill rig to work on the site.

This morning, the site reports this (google translation):

Quote:
So far explorers claimed that since excavations did not yield results, the riddle will bring drilling in rock. They had to help find an empty space, which they believe is in the slope. The work was postponed on Friday because of the rain, in the mud stuck rig who could not get to the place.

Raiders do not give up, they decided to change the method, and in general to stop drilling. The team of explorers is in talks with companies that carry out seismic studies. They begin in September. On Friday, during a press conference at 13.00 explorers will summarize the first phase of work.

- We want to find a company that performs several holes to a depth of 30 meters, they will be introduced no seismic probe that will study the ground. It's all planned for September, it will be the second stage of our work - says a spokesperson for explorers, Andrzej Gaik.

Explorers want to drill a hole into which will be introduced seismographs designed to explore the area using the induced waves. Their distorted image should confirm the existence of the object, if indeed it is in this place.

It sounds like they are determined to resolve this in a way that either finds the railroad infrastructure or verifies to their satisfaction that it does not exist. I hope that the government allows them to continue until they decide on their own to quit.

What I find to be missing from all the news coverage so far is any technical discussion about the interpretation of the ground penetrating radar searches. They were simply presented as evidence of the lost train. Certainly, they were provocative images, but such GPR data is only visually abstract symbolism of the actual objects of the search. Experts can offer informed insight into what that symbolism is saying. I have not seen any commentary about that in the news.

Their digging so far, seems to have revealed a consistent soil type with perhaps random sizeable rocks. There has been reports of finding remnants of pottery suggesting that the soil was placed as fill that contains some trash. Although there has been no reporting that indicates whether there were only a few bits and pieces found, or dozens of cubic yards of such material.

So, overall, assuming this apparent homogenous soil at the site, it is very hard to understand what could have produced those complex and provocative images revealed by the ground penetrating radar.

That needs to be explained in order for this story to make any sense.

Hi,

As a tangent, I was thinking about trying to find the sub pens in France/ The roof was granite and reinforced concrete about 30-50 feet thick. It made it a very difficult for the Allies to hit the roof. Several attempts at flying P38s into the sub pen doors and sending (bombs or torpedoes I do not recall which) to damage the facility was tried and it failed.

The next attempt was to fly Torpex filled radio controlled B17s (with the cockpit roof removed so the aviator could parachute out once he got the aircraft into the air and trimmed up) into the front door of the sub pens. It was also a failure.

The German Nazis were determined. Later in the war, they used similar construction for their underground airplane and rocked factories.

I have no idea how this Polish site was built (regular tunnel or super reinforced). But it may be the diggers are not sure what they are getting into either. They have to understand their readings and try to figure out what they are up against. As one old saying goes, nothing is ever simple.

The homogeneity of the soil may be significant. Natural soils tend to be stratified, so the apparent lack of stratification would suggest an artificial origin, i.e. fill material, and the presence of pottery or brick fragments would be further confirmation of that.

they are going at it with a mars probe sensitivity careful, which is good. Archeology careful.

Doug,

The WWII sub pens are pretty easy to find. See

That's pretty amazing, the Keroman Submarine Base in Lorient, France, Dom (East) and Dom (West), they actually pulled the subs out of the water onto a wheeled carrage and used a gigantic "turn table" to direct the subs into covered repair bays! A submarine roundhouse!

It sounds like this search has been declared a failure. I feel like I have just read a book that was never written. The news coverage has been irritating to say the least. We have been told endlessly about the hidden treasure. But we have not been not told anything about the reasoning, science, and method of the search project. It has been like the sound of one hand clapping.

One hand clapping sounds like a quieter version of two hands clapping. I had a friend who did it quite well, closing his hand as if to make a fist, but allowing the fingers to slap his palm. So, unlike what most folks think, it's not silence.

I see what you mean. I always thought of it as a kind of Zen-like riddle that cannot be processed through conscious thought. I apply it to this gold train search because there seem to be pieces missing from the story.
