They also share a rather long common border with other parts of the former Soviet Union, some of which are likely to soon again be under Russian domination. I can think of several scenarios where whatever is buried had best stay buried, and it has nothing to do with gold.

Oh I think that is exactly it. They have reasons to not want this discovery. In addition to the ones you cite, there are probably several bureaucrats heavily invested in their skepticism about the legend. There always are. I could see this coming three months ago.

What seems logical is colored by our knowledge, the Nazis raped Europe of huge stores of treasure and art, much of which has been located, but some of which may be in buried bunkers, caves, and ships at the bottom of the Baltic. I think there are enough doubts to pursue this until certainty is determined. If it is a munitions train, I would think disposal would be appropriate. If it's a treasure train, it should be recovered. If it's a hollow tunnel, it's a story put to bed.
Intriguing.

Though I concur that "absence of evidence is not evidence of absence"....

If said evidence actually exists, it should be extremely easy for this duo to find investors willing to underwrite a more thorough search, especially for a meager 10% "finder's fee."

About last August-September, the two treasure hunters did provide two of their search images for public display in the news media. They are still available in a search. The second one in particular looks highly provocative. There are graphic indications that are quite suggestive of tanks with big guns protruding.

Of course, the two treasure hunters could have a faked image images, but they did offer to perform the excavation at their cost. So it seems unlikely that they would want to dig a big hole and make themselves look like fools.

Incidentally, I don't think that demanding 10% of the take discredits the treasure hunters. If they are performing a hoax, their take will be nothing.

What has not been forthcoming in the news media are the most recent (mid-November) search images from the two treasure hunters. This search was said to be more sophisticated than their earlier searches. I have no idea why this is being withheld.

This final search by the treasure hunters was immediately followed by a search by an independent team of experts in the last few weeks. Their search images have not been shown in the news media either. To me, this is understandable given that they say they found nothing except possibly a tunnel.

I would say that this is the time for two treasure hunters to speak out about what they found in their most recent search about a month ago.

Am I the only one who doesn't get this?
They say there's a tunnel.
And it's right there.
Anyone thought of breaking out a hole boring machine? Is it a silly concept to suggest they just drill a big hole and lower down a video camera to resolve if there's a tunnel or not there?

If you recall the original Cosmos series on PBS, they did a piece on Venus. You looked thru a telescope and saw Venus covered in clouds. So why are there clouds? There must be water. Why is there water? There must be vegetation. If there is vegetation there must be huge animal creatures roaming the surface.

"What did you see?"

"Clouds"

We eventually dropped probes into Venus and we found...no water, no dinosurs, no vegetation, extremely high air pressure that could crush any living being on the surface with super hot temperatures that no life on Earth could stand.

"Clouds"

What we have is a deathbed admission that the train is there, and some radar searches to help verify that. All you can do...is dig...to prove it or not.

But your right I tend to think there might be motivations to cover it up so the work can go in secrecy...too late for that. I believe any work has to be done with high security because of the importance of this find, but lets just let the dig do its thing, you have to stop the guessing and conjecture and rumors.

I don't think anyone disputes the presence of a tunnel.

What seems to be disputed is whether or not there's anything there other than a tunnel.

Geraldo Rivera & Co. knew there was a vault. They then pitched the idea that it was "Al Capone's Vault," and set up a huge live TV extravaganza surrounding finding out what was in it. I remember the beer bottle...........

Geraldo's TV special trying to spin the "discovery" into a big hype is the reason I do not listen to him even today decades later. He lost my trust in his "snake oil salesmanship."

Hype is a human desire. Wanting to believe in the most unreasonable items. Bermuda Triangle has been solved experimentally but a good hype job is prefered.

Same goes for Atlantis and the Minoan culture.

Who knows, this denial of the Nazi Gold train may be a hype also.

I would not draw any conclusions about the Nazi Gold train based on Geraldo or other burst bubbles in the past. Considering the context, there is nothing farfetched about this lost train legend.

It is right where the Nazis built an elaborate underground system there with apparent unlimited ability. In a war, they plundered massive treasure and hid it. Just the circumstantial evidence of that overall context is very strong. Add in the word of mouth of the legend and the search instrument results, and the evidence is overwhelming.

The only problem is that the governmental process does not match a desire to resolve the mystery right in front of them. Perhaps they find the drama to be inconvenient.

I remember watching the Geraldo Vault thing, how much was hype, how much reality is an open debate, but knowing Capone he may have cleaned it up on the clue he might have been on the chase getting rid of the evidence. The response of the Nazi Gold train is just a similar, hiding the evidence, perhaps to come back and get it later....that never happenned.
Remember the 2 guys said its "NOT IN A TUNNEL". The train may have been placed on a side track and covered quickly. I don't think these guys would have come forward if they thought nothing was there..

Here is an article that shows one of the earlier search images produced by the two treasure hunters. Also, it shows what apparently is the imagery from the most recent search a few weeks ago.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... THING.html

The two main search tools for this type of work are a magnetometer and ground penetrating radar. The latter (GPR) has the ability to produce imagery by a process that is a sort of reflection of the buried object. In that sense, it is related to photography, but with unpredictable distortion and limited resolution. The results also vary according to soil conditions. Water saturated soil, for instance, can render GPR ineffective in producing meaningful imagery.

A magnetometer produces an indication of the buried object that is not the object itself, but rather, a diagram of the shape and force of the magnetic field produced by the object as it is impinged by the earth’s natural magnetic field. Such information is far more abstract than the imagery produced by GPR. Magnetometers also detect only ferric materials. Magnetometer results are also easily disrupted by interference such as power lines, magnetic storms, and the existence of interfering ferric materials.

So the two methods each have their pros and cons. It is said that both search teams used both methods. So far, only the two treasure hunters have provided their search results, but they do not clarify how they were produced. Their second image that appears to show the actual guns protruding from military tank vehicles would have to be produced by GPR, since a magnetometer would never produce a graphic diagram that literal. Even for GPR, the gun-like features of the second image are amazing. Those features may not be guns, but they are still highly unusual as a pattern if they are simply natural ground conditions.

Overall, the most effective tool for concluding that no buried train exists at the site is the magnetometer. Trains are iron, and a train buried 30 feet deep would be an extraordinarily easy target for magnetometer detection. Unless the site is littered with iron trash nearer to the surface, the buried train would produce a thoroughly convincing magnetic anomaly signature. And if there were no such signature, no train could exist there.

Until the professional search team shows us a magnetometer survey that lacks a huge magnetic anomaly, they have not proven anything to us.

Once again, it's not possible to "prove a negative."

I can't prove the Loch Ness Monster doesn't exist. All I can do is present a mountain of evidence that says that if a creature of that size exists in that specific frigid lake without a breeding population, we have to throw into the rubbish heap about half of the bedrock principles of zoological and aquatic biology.

It's still incumbent upon those making the extraordinary claims to produce the necessary extraordinary evidence.

Regarding proving a negative: The professional team has not disclosed any information that proves to me that the train does not exist, as they claim. So, to me, that claim is just their opinion. Any claim about what is buried there cannot be proven without digging it up. I agree that both sides must prove their claims, and present their best evidence in the process.

But what would prove to me that the train does not exist is a magnetometer search that produces no significant magnetic anomaly. I am not sure how “proving a negative” fits that outcome. If I see no elephant in the living room, I would say that proves to me that there is no elephant in the living room.

About proving a negative...
The internet has spawned a crazy backwards logic concept for 'making a point' which is now a staple that apparently has served the Moon landing hoax and Holocaust Denial pushers quite well:
1. Declare your idea as an absolute, and 'proven'
2. Provide no such actual proof to support point # 1
3. Shoot down anyone who says anything the contrary and demand they prove that the denial is wrong
4. Dismiss any evidence against your premise, with no plausible reason to do so
5. Then, declare you've won every argument
