I'm down to visiting RyPN about two or three times a week or less so I've have had to log in every time regardless.

The last few times I've visited I get a security warning and my browser/antivirus combo won't let me open the page which makes me ask if the security certificate has expired.

I'm really surprised RyPN has held on as long as it has in this condition, especially with the stories of lost passwords that have caused the Articles to remain stagnant for 17 years.

Attempt one...

I'm going to consider this as a 'read only' site for a while. I wrote 5 pretty concise paragraphs on the Roebling 80T GE Tuesday. When I pressed preview, it all disappeared, and I couldn't log in again to see if my post was still there. This is the first time I've been able to log in since. I'd love to share lots of things I've seen and/or worked on over the years, but it just isn't worth the frustration.

Strangely enough, over the past few days, the issues have been non-existent for me. I'm able to log in easily, stay logged in, and post like normal.

The issue is still lingering. It is beyond what I can address as a moderator. I have emailed David Collison and not heard back as of this moment. Thank you all for bearing with this for the time being.

Please have him contact me if he's willing. I'd be happy to take it over and give it a good home on a fast server.

Stop waiting for "permission" and just do it--including backing up all the old content ASAP. If need be, I know a couple professionals who could "hack" things for us.

There comes a point when you declare the car "abandoned" and just have it towed.

I'm offering new hosting, not a hostile takeover. :) I would want most/all of the mods and admins to continue in their roles and I'd want support of the current owner.

Without the community being on board for the effort, it would just go stagnate, so why bother?

The "current owner" is functionally "missing in action."

That's probably the only one not on board with an upgrade.

It's not like we can hijack a website domain registration............ or can we?

As a possible strategy to address the board repeatedly logging us off as we attempt to enter posts or responses, I offer the following observation:

Every time I've gotten through of late, I've delayed clicking on "new topic," "quote," "reply" or whatever. Let the board or thread sit for a minute (yes, 60 seconds or so) before clicking on the appropriate button. Give the archaic background server software time to sort through whether you're a bot or not. In fact, go check your e-mail or some other website page first. Then come back and click on "preview" or "submit." Also, copy the entry you are trying to add to your clipboard before submitting in case it balks on you yet again.

I hope that this information will prove interesting, if not useful. Steamlocomotive.info had a phpBB forum system. It was poorly installed, poorly maintained and not of much use to be honest. When the exact same thing started happening to our website our host asked us to shutdown phpBB and to, perhaps, install the latest version thereof. So far I've shut it down, but haven't gotten around to upgrading the software. When the number of people accessing the phpBB system exceeded 500 the webserver it was on would simply slow to a crawl.

This is the first time I've been able to login in well over a month. It seems like there's either a PHP version issue or DB issue as far as I can tell which ain't much from this end as nobody here has server side access. I think this is phpBB v3.1 which is about 12 years old. There have been quite a few PHP updates since then.

Out of frustration I logged in yesterday via Google Chrome which is a browser I never use. I had no problems. I had chosen the auto-login which is something else I never use and it logged in today flawlessly. I guess for now if I want to post I'll be forced to use chrome............mld

Try another day and time and report back. You MIGHT have just gotten lucky.

This is the 3rd login in a two day period so for right now it seems to have worked.......mld
