Back in 1967 I had a cab ride in a KM at the SP Bakersfield Yard. It was MUd with an EMD "F" unit. If the movies and/or photos from that visit ever come to the surface, I will be sure to send them to NCRM post haste. The thought of one of these rarities running, even as a control trailer, is amazing, and finding the parts to make it run with its original engine is a major coup.

Would the 9010 still need engines to be made operational? I forget if as a camera car it could move under its own power or not? Either way it is nice to see a pair of Trucks have been located.

The camera car was not self-propelled. I only saw it once, when it was sitting in the West Colton yard. One of my daughters and I were going out to Orange Empire, and I stopped to show her the then-new SP yard. She pointed toward the engine service area and asked, "What's that strange-looking engine over there?", and I said "My gosh! You found the camera car!" Then I explained the story behind 8799 and how it came from Germany. (it was too far away to photograph with my non-telephoto camera of that era).

According to the SP 9010 Group:
Quote:
The two Maybach MD870 turbocharged V-16 motors remain intact and in place, as does one of two Voith L830rU turbo transmissions. The rear motor and rear transmission both appear to be in good order, and work continues to determine suitability for operation.
