Actually, HBI-600 is Cummins-ese for an "H" engine, "B" is off-road, "I" is industrial and the 600 was the old, very old way Cummins classed 6-cylinder engines. I have worked on a couple of HBI-600's, can be expressed as an H6. An HR is an H with a "revised" bore, enlarged from 4-7/8" diameter piston to 5-1/8" piston. The other referred to "220" isn't the same as an H6 or even an HR. The H engines had just 2 valves per cylinder, one intake, one exhaust. The NH (think 220) had 4 valves per cylinder, 2 each intake and exhaust. Also, their bore was 5-1/8" like the HR. Then you move to the 855 which has 5-1/2" cylinders. Oh, and to really confuse the deal, the H engine have "open" fuel pump drives and outside fuel lines.

The H line was dead circa 1970. I've chased parts over the years and stuff can be found. If you follow parts numbers forward, you'd be surprised how many of the newer parts fit the older engines. And the basic engine design Clessie did in the 1930's is still being used.

Good info. The one thing I know is that I don't even know how much I don't know. Happy to soak up any info about this stuff that anyone can provide. :)
