I've poked around the net and can't find any list or database of surviving or even preserved NYC equipment. SRHA has one for Southern stuff and there are some other roads out there with some. There are also bits and pieces of various roads' rosters, (locos - real or dismal, passenger cars, etc) but I can't seem to find anything resembling a list on the Central or its larger subsidiaries (MC, Big Four, Canada Southern).

On a related note, the NYCHS website seems to have been undergoing an overhaul, but there doesn't seem to be recent progress and there isn't much said about what the society's collection looks like (though clues point to a comprehensive one) or if they have a permanent home or any such thing.

Any help you may be able to provide would be greatly appreciated.

I would ask the New York Central Museum in Elkhart, Indiana for starters, isnt there a NYC historical society?

The NYC Museum in Elkhart is adrift without purpose or mission. Have you looked at the website? It's an indicator of the larger problems facing the museum. It's also a stepchild in city politics (think Amtrak to Fedzilla = NYC Museum to Elkhart) that is used for oneupsmanship more than preservation.

Not being able to easily find information out about preserved equipment of one of the largest railroads in U. S. history is just one symptom of a general information age problem. I run up against this sort of thing quite a bit actually. Someone mentions a locomotive, either individual number or a class, which I might want to know more about, and I just can't find out much about them on the internet. I think the last thing I tried that with were the Erie K-5 Heavy Pacifics. Amazingly, there really are not many good overview images of them on the web.

I think a lot of this stems from some of the best older images being tied up in proprietary collections, like the DeGoyer, where you need to part with some serious wampum to acquire said images.

Maybe one of those group preservation projects that some web savvy people in the preservation movement could work on is a comprehensive Wiki-type compilation of those sorts of things. Just a vague notion at this point.

And before any smarter-than-thou types can chime in, we have indeed noticed that the S motors should be listed as 16 wheels, 2-D-2. There are over 2000 units listed in the data base, and a few typos are bound to occur. This will be fixed in the next update.

NYC GP-9 5972, later Conrail 7527, is still with us. It is listed on Scott's list as a Buckingham Branch unit, but was owned by Winchester and Western and leased to Buckingham Branch. It is currently in service in South Jersey.

On a related note, I understand there was some effort afoot to preserve the equipment stored on the grounds of a power plant in central New York and owned by an NRHS chapter. Anyone know what became of this effort? I think Danbury was mentioned as one of the repositories for some of the stuff.

I was running to work posting to help the best I can before I left.
Looks like others here chimed up.
steamlocomotive.com has a preserved steam engine database. Other equipment I would have to find as good as a book there is for the N&W rosters and Nickel Plate.
I agree the Elkhart museum may be poltically connected but the NYC is very important to its history since it has a major yard there, so why not a museum. To get a tru-blue NYC 4-8-2 on display there is a major feat.

HP and I were discussing the Mohawk and he phrased it better than anything else I've heard: "Trading a GG1 hulk for the 3001 was the deal of the century - like buying Manhattan from the Indians for some $24 worth of beads and trinkets!"

Elkhart is a fine location for a major NYC-themed museum, considering its importance to the western end of the Water Level Route. I wasn't complaining about it being here, merely observing that it has problems related to city politics.
