Baldwin's initial Diesel experiment.

Does anyone have a source for the dimensions of this experimental Diesel constructed by Baldwin? I'm uncertain regarding the year. Any scan or data would be appreciated.

From Baldwin Locomotives, Brian Solomon, 2009 Voyuageur Press.

The book also refers to an article by Samuel M. Vauclain in July 1926 in "Baldwin Locomotives" which profiles this locomotive.

This is a scan taken from Fred Westing's book "The Locomotives that Baldwin Built" 1966, page 131. It doesn't give overall dimensions, but does say the wheels were 40 inch diameter, so you could scale the image from that.

I'm still hoping to get firmer dimensions for the project, so anyone with anything to add or donate, please keep it coming!

We probably have the original Baldwin specifications and drawings for this premier unit in MG-427 BADLWIN-HAMILTON COLLECTION at the Pennsylvania State Archives in Harrisburg. You would need to visit to do the research on your own.

Diesels from Eddystone: The Story of Baldwin Diesel Locomotives by Dolzall and Dolzall, Kalmbach Publishing, devotes several paragraphs and photos to this engine. Most of the information duplicates the entries above, but there is a left-front, three-quarter view on page 10 that might be of value. (apparently left-side photos are rare?)

The book is apparently available on eBay and Amazon.

"Diesels from Eddystone: The Story of Baldwin Diesel Locomotives" can be viewed on archive.org. You have to "check out" the copy to see the full text. This probably requires that you register, but there is no cost to do so.
