How does someone without insurance deal with this?
They don't. A friend of mine retired early and went for four years with no more health insurance than crossed fingers, and luckily made it to Medicare that way. I've saved my money with an eye for retiring at 60, and was still gobsmacked at the premiums, $24,000 per year for my wife and me (about what the RR was paying for employee health insurance), which I understand is a deep discount compared to the pre-Obamacare price for individual insurance.

Regarding "The best health-care in the world" boast, I recall a statistic brought up both when Clinton was trying to create universal health-care, and again when Obama did. There is some universally recognized metric for measuring various country's health-care systems that factors in cost, accessibility, quality, etc. The first time I heard about it, the US was in 35th place. The second time around, we had slipped to 37th place, behind Cuba. In case anyone's interested, Kuwait was first place both times.

BTW everyone here who has written a post against universal health-care who is over age 65, shame on you! We all know what's in your wallet, and it ain't a Capital One card!

Apparently, I'm being visited by Steve Jobs' ghost because I clearly entered a reality distortion zone.

It started innocently enough last Friday when I learned of an incident at Planet Fitness where a long time black card member was permanently banned from the "no judgement zone" for the egregious offense of wearing Crocs. The manager that did this was fired twice from a real gym nearby.

It is fascinating after the last few years that anybody trusts the Medical Government Complex. Myocarditis, cha cha cha... Gain of function, cha cha cha..

But there's always good news, so lets focus on the Veterinarian getting richer and richer.

Of course seeing the victims of the Hawaii fire get $700 while an aspiring Presidential candidate wants to prolong the killing because we've only spent a couple percent of our defense budget on the futile proxy war. A friend of mine with "that card" is having to fight and argue for the shot he needs to jack up his 7.8 hemoglobin to something north of ten. 13.5 is normal. So while UPMC spends all kinds of money for Nepali translators who get the royal treatment, despite their refusal stop freebasing the tumeric that puts them in the hospital, we can't seem to understand.

Retiring early, assuming it's elective and not necessitated without taking care of the fundamentals doesn't make one a victim, it makes a player in stupid game with stupid prizes.

I would love to retire early and be done with the botched ERP installation that's had me logged in at home to 11:30. I don't because I'm a responsible adult, and I won't take foolish risks with my home or other assets. My job as I see it is to aggravate the wife when we're roomies at Shady Acres or leave a rich widow. Neither is happening if I take those "free" tickets in the bankruptcy lottery.

The only way any of this gets fixed is Washington DC has a Tunguska Event.
