with the whole EPA crisis, I heard rumors of Portland & Western EMD class SD9 #1854 (ex-SP #4433) possibly being donated or sold to the ORHF in Portland. I also read sources saying it's either been through or slated for "mandated" scrapping. i then see reports and videos from over the past few months with #1854 STILL pulling rock trains.

I have no confirmation of any of the suggested dispositions.

does anyone know the actual staus/disposition of this historic treasure?
any info or tips much appreciated!

thx,

Much of this might hinge on the locomotive's replacement.

This is one of the 88 locomotives required to be scrapped 'punitively' for EPA violations. Part of the wording of the consent decree is as follows:
Quote:
"Defendants shall be relieved of responsibility to comply with this Decree [here implying scrapping] with respect to a Regulated Locomotive upon the transfer of ownership and operation of a Regulated Locomotive ... only if all the applicable requirements below are satisfied with respect to the
Regulated Locomotive(s) to be transferred...

If so, iI'd expect this would 'most easily' be interpreted as the locomotive being 'donated' with the usual pathetic holes drilled through the block -- not that much of a problem for a locomotive slated for static display.

If there has been been some difficulty in assigning or acquiring replacement power, oe if anything has held up acquisition or in-service operability of the replacement unit(s), that might explain the SD9 continuing to work.
