I have heard a rumor that Union Pacific is going to scrap their wrecker #910006 at Roseville. Anybody know for sure?

It looks that way. They are scrapping a bunch of old equipment in Roseville.

Also two baggage cars from MOW service, including this one and UP 904239, apparently starting tomorrow. (Photographer unknown, if you click the back arrow on the flickr photo you can see them all together.)

Evidently, there is no place a dozer can't access to retrieve an errant piece of railroad equipment, so no need to keep one of these stashed SOMEWHERE?.

I'd think "they don't eat much, so what would it hurt to keep one in reserve SOMEWHERE.?"

But, maybe there's nobody left to operate it proficiently, not much call for it's services, so no need to keep anyone that's trained to operate it.

A recently retired MofW manager told me, before he left, that they're also doing away with the big fleet of ballast cars. Bottom dump, not side dump...and not the old 2 bay cement hoppers with the tops removed that they used to use. He told me that on our division, they're just stockpiling ballast at certain intervals and it's more cost effective to round up a bunch of dump trucks and have them loaded by a wheeled loader and trucked to where they need it. They bring the ballast in via Georgetown RR belt train and pile it here and there.

That's a relatively new crane- hate to hear of any of those beauties getting scrapped.
Note the three axle trucks under the baggage car. Bet they keep those!

My guess knowing UP since I retired in Roseville on July 1st, is that nothing will be saved from that equipment. The Crane and two baggage cars were set over to the dirt after a derailment in Roseville in late April while Hulcher was still in the yard. The UP brought in a newer crane to match the one in Portola. Both Cranes are the same model and will use the same parts. There is still a crew in based in Roseville that runs the big hook at Portola and Roseville. I have worked with them on a couple of derailments as a locomotive engineer moving their equipment around.
