You can find thousands of videos from Cass Scenic Railroad's Pacific Coast Shay #2 on the
web, but to find good pictures with the original owner Mayo Lumber in Paldi, BC is almost
impossible.
Now I came across this nice video about Mayo Lumber made in 1938 and 1943 and think it
is worth to share.
It feature also their 50-2 Shay #3 (now at British Columbia Forest Discovery, Duncan, BC).

The second picture is her while working for WFI at Honeymoon Bay, just up the track about 2 miles from Hillcrest at Mesachie Lake. She was the last geared engine to be used there.

They also had at one time, a 3T Willamette geared loco and a 50-2 Shay (w/superheat).

I got a brief ride in her in 1967 while she was switching at North Vancouver.

Her first owner, Mayo Lbr., was across the lake from Hillcrest at Paldi. Back in the day, this was a steam rich environment with many operations logging all that they could reach.

I saw #114 at North Vancouver and Cass. I had the pleasure of telling the Cass shop crew how to make tea with #114. Up in Canada the crew had fitted an emersion heater to a valve on the backhead to heat their tea water. This loco is touted as the only wood burning Pacific Coast Shay but if you look at the builder's photo you can see the filler spout form the oil tank.

here i found that PC Shay together with Hillcrest Lumber #10 Climax at
"Honeymoon" dated 1961.

Almost 60 years later they are "divorced" but still alive.
Just 2700+ miles (road miles) apart.

This is at Honeymoon Bay, site of Western Forest Industries.

Hillcrest did their switching for them in later years. They wouldn't always go up there every day, but did work the yard frequently. One of the spurs was laid out the wrong way for operation in later years and this caused the crew to get a car out by poling. There was one mounted on the Hillcrest Climax 10. The fireman would get off the engine to help the brakie hold the pole in place while the move was being made.

I witnessed this in August of 1967 & that's when I got my first try at firing. That didn't go exactly great, I had no idea what I was doing at that young age.

As I recall the Honeymoon Bay line was 56 or 60 pound relay from the CP mainline. Made in England if memory serves.
