Hi Everyone,

Would anyone have a good picture of the top of one of Via Rail's FP9Arm units with HEP fitted? Specifically a picture looking down on top of the large fan fitted to the space previously occupied by the steam generator?

Units fitted with HEP, 6300, 6302, 6304, 6307, 6308, 6311 and 6313.

It's difficult to model some of these F units because of a lack of decent photos of the roof details.

I volunteer at the Alberta Railway Museum, where privately owned 6304 and 6311 are currently stored. I'll take some photos and put them up here the next time I am out, weather permitting of course.

Here is their current appearance:

The HEP diesel in these is a Detroit Series 92.

Thanks.

Those units look spectacular all dressed up in CNR green. They had been in California for a short time if I remember correctly.

Yes indeed. While 6311 does not appear to have been operated after being sold by VIA, 6304 had quite the career across the U.S. west coast, and wore multiple paint schemes at different times. It has also been modified to be able to control the dynamic brakes on trailing units, despite not having them itself:

Oh yeah! They aren't CNR steam, nor are they FPA4's, but that's the way CNR Diesel locomotive should look! Beautiful.

Those pictures are fantastic.

Thanks very much for taking them.

Can I ask what the red thing is inside the large cover over the fan on the one unit? These covers are CN design are they not? I know EMD/GMD had their style. But that looks like what CNR fitted to some units in snow plow service.

Thanks! It was actually quite pleasant up there, I got to enjoy the sun on what will probably be one of our last warm days before winter really hits hard up here.

The red thing is a plastic mop bucket being used as a stack cover.

I am not sure if it was CN or GMD who came up with the large winterization hatch, but it was not applied to all CN's units. It is indeed similar to, but quite a bit smaller than the massive hatches applied to some of the plow service F7's etc later in their careers.
