 Post subject: Walkersville Southern Removes Track in Frederick

Location: Kent Island, Maryland
Went out to Frederick on Saturday to help Walkersville Southern remove some of the old PRR track into Frederick. The city of Frederick is putting in a bike trail and has allowed us to go retrieve anything we can use, rails, joint bars, tie plates, etc.
We had two teams out working, one working on pulling spikes and removing tie plates and another working on joint bars. Moving onto other sections and removing rails will be on another day.
The plan is for the trail to eventually bridge over Maryland Route 26, where it will parallel WS tracks to the Monocracy River Bridge. Future concepts for the trail have it to continue all the way to Woodsborro. Hoping that we can have a bike transfer in the future.

Yes, it is ONLY SOUTH OF 26. We lost the ability to go into Frederick when the mouth of Route 26 was put in. No crossing allowed there...

The largest number I heard thrown out there was 100 lb on the crossings, lighter between with variations here and there. We found what I believe to be cast iron rail that’s pre-1900. Take your guess... no markings.

At this stage in the game, given scrap efforts worldwide and decreasing supply, I would encourage ANY operating rail museum to stockpile any rail they can--especially if it's 1) "free" for the taking and 2) nearby. The days of being able to grab rail from an abandoned Class One siding or yard are pretty much long gone, and even abandoned industrial sidings are getting scarce.

Traditional "stick rail" WITH matching joint bars is getting harder to come by. A couple years ago I brokered a deal between two rail museums, one of whom needed to build a new siding to relocate stored rail cars and another with a healthy supply of rail salvaged from a former PRR yard literally within sight of their operation. The latter sold the rail and joint bars at basic scrap value, and the former sent a truck 175 miles to get the rail from the stockpile!

I heard that it’s going to be used for a new storage siding next to our current one in Walkersville. It’s starting to get very crowded. Suspect to change though...

That would be Bessemer steel or pre-Bessemer wrought iron. Cast iron experiments in rail were in the mid-century. As was said elsewhere, rail with matched joint bars is wonderful stuff for sidings. All it needs is appropriate sub-grade, ballast and tie support.

Down here in Southeastern Va. i know of where about 5 miles of jointed abandoned rail is that was once main line trackage. When Norfolk and Western merged with the Virginian Rwy. they abandoned the former Virginian main from Bowers Hill in Chesapeake,Va. to Just east of Suffolk, Va. Most if not all of the rail on that section (and also a signal pole) is still in place. This happened back in the 1960's. Large trees are now grown on the ROW but not over the rail yet.

A section of this track does have some small trees growing from it farther up the line. The last time this was all used was by WS in the 1990s for speeder runs, so a lot has overgrown rather rapidly if it wasn’t upkept. The specific section we worked on was upkept as a median between the road and the parking lots. The grass around the track was dead and dry, I assume someone came by and sprayed some chemicals in anticipation for removal. It was easily raked away.
