You mean putting the compressors on the smokebox front....?

Or the hinges in general...?

So you can take off the whole smoke box front to access the front end.

Once you’ve disconnected all the plumbing, it seems just lifting them off would be a small job.

For that matter, why not just hinge the whole front with pumps attached.

Have you ever tried to lift one? :-)

Ever tried to pickup about 600 pounds or so of dead weight that is above your waist and odd shaped. If you can do it then more power to you.

It looks like the bracket on the right side of the boiler swings just the compressor. The bracket on the left side is mounted to the smoke box front so that the bracket is also the hinge for the smoke box front.

My directions are as if you are in the engineers seat looking forward.

Well, we do have cranes in our shop for appliance removal. And an eye bolt screws nicely into the pump top for lifting.

Yes....but you then have to set them down somewhere and there is a risk of damage. If they never leave the locomotive the risk is lessened.

This arrangement makes sense as to do smokebox/tube work without removing the pumps by crane.

Few roundhouse in the US had cranes, certainly not over every stall... US steam was designed to be serviced at 'wild N woolly' facilities.

Even more so if you look at photos of the C&O 1300's on the very end branch lines they were purchased to run on. One and two stall buildings far into the hills of coal country.

On Friday, September 21, a friend and I visited the shops of the Western Maryland Scenic RR and were quite pleased to see the continuing progress on the 1309. Here are some photos from our visit. Many thanks to the staff at WMSR for their hospitality. I was very encouraged by the progress they're making on this big locomotive and am very much looking forward to seeing it operate in the not too distant future..

As noted in another post on RyPN: apparently 1309 has been 'first fired' -- presumably this means with appropriate water around the firebox sheets. I haven't seen any reference to a hydro test, or indication in the many photographs immediately above that the boiler is ready for pressure testing, so I look forward to a report on exactly what took place...

It has been Hydro tested at least 2 times that I'm aware of. The latest was done just days before the fire was lit this morning.
