Evening, I am wondering if the UP has scrapped the 4 diesel fuel tank cars stored in Cheyenne? They do not show up in a recent drone fly over video on youtube? Looks like one of the CSA tenders was positioned for possible scrapping.

I'm surprised they stuck around as long as they did. They were 1955-ish builds.

I was kind of surprised to hear scrapping was even considered, they weren't eating anything and they ain't making no more!

Ed, Had replied in a message in regards to an email I sent a while back that UP planned to scrap both CSA tenders for their trucks and possibly the diesel fuel tank cars. Ed had explained that each of the 4 tankers were filled with crude and corrosion from diesel fuel. I am wondering if all this is the truth or did the UP turn them into fire fighter training cars? One of them was used to move SP 4449 fuel recently.

Me, I was hoping to see the old CSA challenger tenders restored as water cars and roll behind 3985. One can hope anyways.

These 1950's era tank cars. https://donstrack.smugmug.com/UtahRails/Union-Pacific/UP-Fuel-Tenders/i-TSJxgZp/A

4 of them lived in Cheyenne up till recently.

Two of these type turbine tenders live in Cheyenne but according to Ed not for long. Plans are keep the bogies only. http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=2226323 This one is in Ogden UT with GTEL 26.

Ah! I didn't realize there were tank cars, I see 'UP diesel fuel tender' and think of converted steam locomotive tenders.
Still troubling that those (the tenders, not the tankers) are facing scrapping!

CD, It's hard to tell with the UP what they might have in store for those CSA tenders? John from Wasatch Railroad Contractors might have some insight?

Might be easier to build a new tank on the existing trucks

Exactly. I don't think the new DOT standards for HHFT's apply to the fuel tenders (either oil for the steam locomotives or diesel) because they never hit the number of cars included in the new rule, but it's probably safer to go with a newly fabricated tank that's DOT-117 compliant, even if it's sitting on the legacy frame and trucks.

Car57, Thanks for the update on their status. Looks like at least three of them survive. The black tank car looks like a 50's era cars as well?

Far as I knew, Wasatch and UP steam stay away from one another these days.
