Impressive rebuild. 148 will be a fine loco for a long time after all of this. Her older sibling so to speak 750 (FEC 80 a 1910 model) would need this kind of love to run again. Interesting to me that they did decide to replace the boiler's first course. Makes me wonder if that first course was thin at the bottom like 750's. On 750 the thin material compete with a hole was in front of the flue sheet in the smoke box portion of the course, but I can only assume the part in the pressure vessel was thinner than allowable. So given that the front flue sheet is a third of the way into the first course, it this because these locos were originally saturated steam and converted later to super heated steam requiring the flue sheet to be moved back in the course?

I'm guessing the new first course will be welded, but the seam between it and the second course will be riveted.

On the first course, is thinning common at the bottom? Being a cooler section my thinking is it becomes deposition area for mud n scale.

The Florida East Coast Railway Society was given the opportunity to tour U.S. Sugar's shops this past weekend to get an update on the 148's restoration. The tour was part of the society's 2018 convention. Here are a few of the items they had on display for us to view.

All of this sounds good! Where is this engine going to operate?

Nothing has been said about this that I know of, so I don't think anybody outside of US Sugar knows for sure, but I understand the firm has some 25 miles of railroad line to haul sugar cane, so maybe it will be on plant trackage.

Of course, it would also be lovely to see her stretch her legs on the Florida East Coast and keep the new Brightline trains company!

A personal note--It does wonders for one's soul to see something really positive happening, especially with the drama we see too much of involving rail trails, slowed steam restorations, and so on.

Amen!

She's gone from a rusting hulk sitting in Michigan to being fully restored to running condition. I got my eyes on this project and the Alaska S160.

I'm pretty sure this engine was a hulk in Colorado, not Michigan.

It was in Traverse City Michigan for a few years. Even was mistaken for a LS&I steam locomotive on occasion.

And a hulk in Connecticut before that.

This must be where the southern saying, "Give me sugar" comes from?

One thing is sure, US Sugar is being a "sugar daddy" for the 148!
