We have received new cast steel driving boxes from a foundry in Ohio for use on Austin Steam Train Association’s 2-8-2 #786. These will be going through our machine shop in the coming weeks. Many thanks to TVRM for the loan of their pattern for these boxes. In the background, you can see the crank shaft for the Climax being restored by Mountain State RR & Logging Historical Society. It is here to have everything except the crank discs replaced.

Here, the crank disc bores are being cleaned up.

Image
Mountain State had new bevel gears made, here one is being bored for a press fit on the new shaft.

Ron is cutting keyways in the new crankshaft.

#90’s running gear overhaul is nearing completion. Over the summer, we bought and modified a Stertil Koni scissor lift for use as a pit jack. It has turned out to be a great improvement over our previous set up.

Currently, #90’s wheels are all reinstalled, and her rods are going back on.

We have been hired to overhaul an 8-1/2” cross compound air compressor. Its high pressure steam cylinder needed to be bushed due to being worn over the maximum supported size. Here we see the new bushing installed, and faced off to match the face of the cylinder.

Image
A small boiler that we are building is nearing completion. Here, the crown bars are starting to be installed.

The front tube sheet is being test fitted.

The new throttle casting has been machined and in this photo is being lapped in.

Our Central Vermont box car #40025 is in the car shop being resided.

Great photos and thank you giving us all a peek into the various projects underway at Strasburg.

Kelly or Lynn,

Might you elaborate on what made the set of new boxes that they had on hand not suitable for machining? I have no doubt there is a reason just curious as to what it is..... lest someone else make the same mistake in the future.

Cheers, Jason

Kelly,

Looks nice. Care to share your choice of lumber for the lining? Also, what is the black around all the bolt heads. I assume some sort of sealant, but what?

Happy Thanksgiving!

This is one of RYPN's best features. I always look forward to seeing Kelly's updates and salivate over the machining work going on there.
Thank you as usual Kelly and have a Happy Birthday up there in PA.

Lumber? Well, actually... it is Boral TruExterior siding, backed up by 3/4" plywood inside for rigidity. I'm not sure about the specific sealant, I will have to check next week.

I seem to recall that when the CV and Rutland boxcars were rebuilt by SRC about 15-20 years ago, redwood or mahogany was used for the sheathing. Did that material not hold up in service?

Mr. Anderson - is this SRR's first use of Boral TruExterior siding? If not, please share your experience with using this product. I am particularly interested in cutting, fastening, painting, durability, and dimensional stability vs. various wood species and any other materials you have used for siding. Thank you.

I agree that these updates are pretty much my favorites - I love to see the various projects that the crews there are working on. It's amazing how many steam locomotives around this country there are that have had some form of Strasburg work done on them. I'd be curious to know if anyone had a percentage of engines that have Strasburg-produced or machined/refurbished parts.

Kelly,
Might I ask what foundry in Ohio is making small runs of small steel castings? I need to find them for a couple of projects I'm working on.

We used Columbiana Foundry, though Quaker City Castings came in neck and neck with their bid. This is another situation debunking the rumors that we no longer make anything here in the USA.

I will have to check next week for detailed answers about the box car.

Must eat turkey!

Kelly,

I am curious what material you used for the driving boxes? Were you able to use a standard alloy or a special blend? I often here lots of discussion about metallurgy and am curious if you would share with the group how you choose your materials.

Thanks,
Jason

Thanks. I am well aware of both foundries. They are but 30 miles from me and when I was in the foundry business they were competitors of ours. We seem to be blessed with several good jobbing foundries in this area, including Beaver Valley Alloy in Monaca that the T1 Trust is using to produce their driver centers.

I too would be interested in knowing the materials spec.
