When we converted 1522's pilot truck to RB, we had new boxes made to a design that Doyle McCormak had used up in Portland, machined them to fit the new bearings. The pilot truck wheelsets were Amtrak coach design. The Trailing truck used the existing boxes machined to fit the new bearings. The axle ends were turned down a bit and the new bearings pressed on. We also did a conversion on the six wheel Commonwealth tender trucks. Too bad the driving wheel boxes weren't convertible.

Maybe I don't have enough to do before bed, but I went to ORX's website...WICKED...they appear to be able to do everything you would ever want with wheels, axles, etc.

You know...the 4501 is going to look like a brand new BMW when they get done!

A brand new BMW? Close! How about a brand new BLW?

Radiography of the backhead weld started last night and finished up tonight.

Goodness...

Can we say new crank pins anyone? Cold enough to chill a beer on!

Hard to contain the excitement...Grand Canyon used to brag about having the most modern Mikado since the "restoration" age began...I think they are getting ready to lose that line.

It is exciting, I truly do like the 01 but..... The 4960 was turned into a true "super power" locomotive with the installation of the feedwater system circa winter '06-'07. The 01 is getting more modernization work all at once with the feedwater system, stoker, full mechanical lube system, pilot truck roller bearing conversion and trailing truck roller conversion but it is still a combustion chamber away from being "super power".

TVRM I think will easily hold title to most extensive rebuild (especially with the new firebox and backhead) and most heavily modernized..... two things to be very proud of!!!!

Food for thought, Jason

G. Mark Ray, sorry for the thread hijack, but if I come down to TVRM next Friday the 16th will 630 be running, and if so on the local or the loop?

We'll be running it that night for the North Pole trips.

G Mark,

Thanks for the updates. John L and I were talking over a number of great things about your organization after the ARM conference last year. As usual, you guys continue to raise the bar. Looking forward to seeing more of the same.

Mike S.

If it is going to be like a new BMW, I hope TVRM will make sure the engineer doesn't phone and text while he's running it.
I heard that BMW surveyed its car owners about the performance option they would like to see. Cup holder was numero uno.

When I last saw 4501 at the TVRM I was told it would never run again.
Really glad to hear that that has changed.
