Post subject:  Crane 125 question
Hello,
I have a whistle that has markings only on the valve, that is 1" Crane 125. I attached a 1" pipe, 3 ft long to the whistle, then into my air compressor (2 -60 gallon tanks) It will not sound, only blow air. Does anyone have any ideas as to why it would not work? Does this require steam to work? I have pictures attached. Thank you

The reason that you do not get any traditional sound is that there is only half of the whistle there, the bell.

What is missing is the bowl. This is where steam enters at the bottom and flows out through the circular slit of the languid plate to strike the whistle bell itself.

This Crane valve itself is straightforward. What's odd is that bottom half of your whistle is missing.

Thank you for the information! Is this a part that is readily available? Anything special I should know when looking for the missing part?

I'm not saying that it's impossible, but it will be difficult to locate just a bowl for your whistle.

What is the diameter of the bell? Looks to be around maybe 4"

Whistle is possibly a Lunkenheimer 3 chime and many were made, especially ones 5" and under. They went all the way up to 12" for heavy industrial and maritime use.

You'd be better off to gently polish this one for display and look for another on eBay or a steam tractor flea market. You could get a 4" one for a reasonable price. They will be found both with a valve built in (WIV) or without valve WOV).
