Monday the 13th of August saw the first revenue cars interchange in Westernport, MD for the Georges Creek Railway's shortline.

The GCK used their ex. Western Maryland unints SD40 #7471 and GP9 #25 to move the first 12 loads of pulpwood from their interchange with CSX to a landing in Franklin, MD for unloading.

The pulpwood from a Verso Corp. property in Wisconsin was shipped to Maryland for processing into paper at the Verso paper mill in nearby Luke, MD. Currently the woodyard at the Luke Mill is not set up to receive wood by rail requiring it to be unloaded off site and trucked into the wood yard.

GCK handled 12 loads on Monday, 8 loads on Tuesday and 9 loads on Thursday.

Monday's run required the use of the GP9 as a helper due to several factors but the Tues and Thurs, trips the big SD handled with no issues.

Does anyone know how far north the track has been cleared? This snipped from the 1975 FRA map set shows the line as it was back then. Sure were a lot of active mines back then.

The line from Westernport to Barton, MD was cleared just recently, like in the past year. North of Barton are a couple of serious washouts that will need to be addressed when traffic demands required trains that far north. As recent as Wednesday, packages of new ties have arrived for section between Westernport and Franklin.

I noticed from their website that the October 2018 edition of Railpace contains an article about the revived operations of the Georges Creek Railway.
Will have to wait a fornight until my copy of it makes it across the Atlantic.....
