Post subject:  Lionel Records and Lionel Trains--is there a connection?

Hi,

This isn't really related to full-scale railroad preservation, but perhaps some of the vinyl record collectors here could help me out. I purchased this 45 today, produced by what appears to be the Lionel Company. The logo is identical to one on one of my Lionel transformers and the font appears to be the same as the "Lionel Lines" on steam locomotive tenders. Does anyone know if this has any connection to the Lionel train company or are they two separate companies?

The Google machine is not finding anything exactly the same as what you have, but I did see some records with recorded train sounds sold by Lionel to add realism to operating. There is no doubt in my mind that this is related to Lionel Trains, as it shares the logo, but what exactly it's for is beyond me. Did you try putting it on a turntable and playing it?

Yes I did play it and it is very confusing. Neither of the two songs have anything to do with railroading.

In the early 60's the Lionel Corporation started making or at least marketing phonographs, mainly for children. Maybe this record came with one of them. What kind of music is on it?

One side has "The Eyes of Texas" (set to the tune of I've Been Working on the Railroad," and the other side has another cheery song but the title has faded off the record.

That makes sense then, my best guess is that it probably came with a record player intended for children. Interesting find!

This will give you a start on figuring it out:

The circle-L logo on the record is the logo of the same Lionel Corporation that manufactured trains. Lionel made record players in the 1960s along with a number of other not-train products in a desperate attempt to find profitability. It didn't work.
