I've got a four foot section of iron bridge type rail that is undated. However, the railroad historian that I acquired it from had documentation as to the location where it was recovered and I do have verified records of the railroad (Western and Atlantic Railroad of the State of Georgia) that document that iron bridge rail was the type used in the original construction of the railroad and that by the time that the Civil War broke out, less than half of the rail on the main line had been replaced with T rail. Thus, it is known that the rail dates from the period of 1849 to 1861.
