I don't think so. . .although I do think the Seldom Scene had a better sound. . .

Great stuff!
Our farm was within a quarter mile of the Canadian National Dundas Sub. main line. We got to see the end of the steam age - everything from 0-6-0s on work trains to streamlined Northerns at high speed in passenger service. As the song says, the wave from the man in the cab or from the van, never leaves the heart of a child!

Raised By The Railroad Line is classic Seldom Scene. They do a nice version of The L&N Don't Stop Here Anymore too. Lots of nice train songs in bluegrass music.

Couldn't find a copy of "The L&N Don't Stop Here Anymore" by the Seldom Scene, but did find some other variations:

The legendary Johnny Cash:

Kathy Mattea:

Mattea again, studio version:

A haunting, beautiful version by its composer, Jean Ritchie:

I have to say thank you for the compliments on finding the versions of "Raised By The Railroad Line," even though the song, particularly the Seldom Scene version, is a bit bittersweet for me (we lost John Duffy too soon, and I had hopes of using it for a TV series on railroaders that I was never able to sell).

A surprisingly good bit of music (and animated video, too--it even features a Pennsy K4s!) is this introduction to a video game, Railroad Tycoon III; of course, those passenger cars with buffers aren't quite right behind the K4, even if they are red! Arrgh, doesn't anybody get things like that right? Was "Emperor of the North Pole" the last movie to get the look of steam railroading truly right?

My bad. L&N is on my record by Bill Harrell & The Virginians, not Seldom Scene.

Somewhere out there is a video with UP 844 set to music by Pat Metheny....

Well, "hair metal band" Cinderella did a MTV video filmed on the C&TS, but the steam & scenery didn't make the song any better :)

Is this it? Pat Metheny and various steam trains, including UP 844, South African 4-8-4s, UP 3985, and SP 4449:

Hair metal? That's the first I've heard of that term. Song's not as bad as some others I've heard, though. . .

Going to vintage country, we rail enthusiasts weren't the only ones who would miss steam. What's most interesting is how old this one is, from 1955, when the steam to diesel conversion would have been a current news item:

A more recent treatment of the loss of steam and the railroads themselves by Restless Heart, shot at Tennessee Valley and featuring the 610:

Another nice song the Seldom Scene HAS recorded is Norman Blake's "Last Train From Poor Valley".

Came across this looking for something else. First up, the original version by Rusty Draper:

And a more mainstream cover from the same era by Vaughn Monroe:

When I was a little guy, my mom used to complain about my playing some railroad sound records, saying, "It sounds like trains running through the middle of the house!"

I have a strange brain; someone says something, or I think of something, and something else pops into my head. In this case, it is a place where a train really did run through a house--actually, a wooden hotel. Seems to me it was on the Camas Prairie; can anyone confirm this?

I recall seeing on the news (early 80s?) a wooden hotel being moved, getting hung up on a grade crossing and a Santa Fe freight plowing through the building.

EDIT: I was wrong! It was an episode of a spin off show called "Amazing Stories."

Jeff's comment about the train through the house in "Amazing Stories" reminded me of this scene from the end of "Joe Kidd," a Clint Eastwood western from 1972:

There is also a scene where a house is being moved in "Houseboat" (1958, staring Cary Grant and Sophia Loren), and the house and Grant's car are wrecked by an RF&P streamliner.

The wildest, WILDEST train sequence I've ever seen (that also worked) is the train chase sequence from "Go West," which does have a train through the house scene. Part of the reason it works (compared with things like "Unstoppable") is that the film stars the Marx Brothers! Can't take that too seriously!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DOUC_D2DAn8

That chase scene is near the end of the movie. There's also a station sequence at the beginning.

Have fun.

You don't normally think of the Australians as being country music enthusiasts, but apparently they are, and they like some train songs, too:

And now on the lighter side, a variation on "The Wreck of Old 97" that somehow rings so relevent with the trail controversy we seem to have:
