Doe River Gorge Ministries has a unique summer railroad opportunity to offer. We are a Christian camp offering outdoor adventure programs located in the mountains of northeast Tennessee, named for our location where the Doe River flows through a deep gorge. The property includes a very scenic section of the historic East Tennessee & Western North Carolina narrow gauge railroad that established the route through the gorge in the 1880s, which we have restored and operate. During the summer, the railroad is used on weekdays to transport campers to and from several activities in the gorge and on weekends, scenic rides are offered to the public and to parents dropping off their campers.

Each summer we recruit young men and women as counselors and activity staff and this year we are looking for two additional staff members to assist with the railroad. Preferred age of candidate should 18+ years old, but consideration may be given to those going into their senior year of high school and at least 17 years old.

The position will be focused on track and ROW maintenance, but there will also be frequent opportunities to assist with operations. At certain days/times the summer railroad staff will also assist with general camp operations and logistics.

It should be stressed that we are looking for young people of faith, who are interested first in ministry and spiritual growth and in railroads second. Each year, the summer staff becomes a tight-knit community, growing in their faith, and you will be housed and otherwise live in this community. Dates are somewhat negotiable but preferred to start May 22 and can run thru August 4. Probable week off over July 4 holiday. Room and board will be provided plus $310/week and $800 bonus at the end of the summer.

Contact mark@doerivergorge.com, 423 725 4010 ext. 324 for further details.

Have you considered opening it up to retirees? There may well be qualified people that are interested and would treat it like one of those campground host jobs. Granted, they can't dig in ties like the young bucks, but they may well have years worth of track experience that would make them a good foreman.

Thanks for the thoughts. This position is focused on the summer season, as that is when younger help is most available. But we have not put an upper age limit and the foreman in this case IS a retiree, so any "young at heart" person should feel free to inquire.

We work and operate spring thru fall and welcome any other capable volunteer/retiree help, particularly in the spring and fall when less young help is available. And RV spots are available for those who'd prefer their own housing to bunks and communal living.
