I am looking for a source of sliding windows that were commonly found on cupola cabooses.

Also, looking for a source for the sliding screen units as well.

When we needed them for our N5c, we had them built by a local window shop. They were aluminum and had the screens built into the frame which was a double track. They looked good.

Later!

P.S. I am making the wooden window sashes for our N6b and they look good, if I say so myself.

BnOTolSub,

Windows from another caboose probably wont work unless it is from the same class of cars, each one is slightly different. Your best bet, if you can't find anyone with the construction drawings, is to see if you can assemble one from the remains of the window(s) on hand, and then use that as a pattern.

If you are lucky, you might find another caboose that has windows assembled similar to yours and then can use that as a guide, if you don't have enough parts to assemble a pattern.

Good luck,
Rich C.

We are trying to find aluminum frames for the windows in our P&LE bay window caboose as well. If I can just find a supplier for the extrusions I can make up the rest in house.

Search for aluminum window manufacturers. You may be able to get something custom for less money than scrounging new bits & pieces. In effect, every new window is custom if you're not buying off the shelf. So it should be a no-brainier for them if they have useable extrusion profiles. Cautionary warning - aluminum can't be in contact with steel (use an isolation gasket) and use stainless fasteners or you'll have galvanic corrosion problems and the aluminum won't last.

I appreciate the tips thus far. It would help if the original frames were still available on the car, but they were removed some time ago and the windows plated over.

I have a feeling the screens will be an easier replacement than the windows. The screens and tracks were ripped off the outside as well.

An update, I was able to obtain a quote from Dynamic. A little bit pricier than we had hoped, but to be completely "original" would have required all new special tooling, which would have probably doubled the price. There will be another group doing a similar car for someone else, so that may be helping control price.
