A former Youngstown & Southern wood caboose, believed to have been originally built for the B&LE, is available for sale in Youngstown, OH. The wood is in rather poor shape but the trucks and frame are in good condition.

We will entertain any offer for the car.

This looks like a fairly unique caboose with ties to a couple of lesser known roads. Certainly deserves a home or a couple of people with an interest in taking it on. Having moved a caboose in similar condition, the wood body can look daunting. With the wood body in poor condition, prior to the move, we were able to carefully disassemble it, saving sections of it for either reuse or to be used as a pattern. Areas that could not be reused, we saved key pieces to use as patterns. Of course disassembly was well documented.

One other advantage to such a situation is that with the body removed from the chassis, everything was easy and inexpensive to move. The body parts were moved by pick up or strapped to the chassis and then the chassis moved via roll back, or landoll, trailer. Height was not an issue. Key is to also save the windows, doors, cabinet pieces, etc.

Much of the work associated with the wood body, whether various timbers or smaller items like windows and such can be done in home shops then brought to the site for assembly.

As to full dimension lumber, we found a local lumber yard who can order what we need and the pricing was not bad at all.

And with the body off, the frame can be cleaned up and painted properly.

For a mover, we made a pleasant discovery. In talking to local scrap yards, we found that they have trucks to move such items readily available and affordable. And apparently, permits are not always needed. Again, pays to ask around.

I tend to get out to Rick’s YSH museum a couple of times a year. If a group needed a hand with disassembly and moving of this caboose, I’d be happy to help out.

And one last thing. Working on a wood bodied caboose, in our case a PRR N6b, has been a real pleasure. This Y&S caboose would be a real ball to bring back to life.

Rick,

That looks like it was one of the ex-Bessemer K3a cabooses built in the Greenville shops in the '20s. I think Y&S picked up maybe three or four when B&LE started getting the steel bay window jobs in the mid '40s. Out of curiosity, I'll ask some Montour guys about it since Y&S was owned by the Montour at the time. Since B&LE is still around, someone might get lucky and scrounge up some drawings.

I've seen worse brought back. The chassis looks better than the one we started with. This would be a team effort but one that could reap a nice benefit. Hope it finds a home.

Later!
