Looking for options for a machine shop/wheel shop to turn an axle from an ALCo switcher with AAR-A trucks. We can get the wheelset/TM out of the truck to send to a shop.

Where are you located?

Any good wheel shop worth their salt can do this. It may be a matter of not wanting to.

Try Jim Lyons at Lyons Industries in Ebensburg, PA. He has a wheel shop with lots of experience working on historic equipment.

Just about any well equipped machine shop can do that.
I see you are in Northwest Ohio? If you can't find a shop locally try the Age of Steam roundhouse in Sugar Creek, OH.

"Just about any well equipped machine shop can do that."

Perhaps, but they may not have any clue as to the finish quality required for plain bearings. Too coarse a finish and you will heat up and chew up the bearings in no time. This is, of course, a lesson learned the hard way. We ass-u-me-d the shop would know what to do. Wrong. Since then we have specified that, in the vicinity of the journal and motor support bearings, the axle shall be machined or polished to a tolerance no greater than 5 microinches.
