Does anybody have a source for new tamping tools for a Portec/Railway Maintenance Corp/McWilliams tamper? These forged tools have a hexagonal head (see photo) that fits into the guns, but they tend to wear down into a circular shape after a hundred hours or so, making them spin around uselessly. We’re down to a handful of usable tools replacement tools for our machine. Our ace machinist doesn’t think it’s practical to weld up the worn out ones and machine them into a new hexagon. Plus, the business end of the tools wear away as well. Yes, this is about as primitive a tamper as you might find anywhere, but since it matches our broad gauge track, we would really like to keep it running. Does anybody who perhaps used to have a McWilliams tamper maybe still have a crate of unloved tamping tools lying about?

There are people out there that rebuild paving hammer bits, give them a call.

I do have some 1920s Northern Pacific Ry. drawing for similar bits.

We got some tamper bits from them for our Ingersoll Rand tools, looks like the same as your picture.
