Are there any re-creations of the old strap railroad construction from the 1830's and 40's located across the country?
Please advise where they are located, if any and whether any of them offer demonstration rides with vintage equipment recreations of the era. Thanks for any information.

We're planning on putting a short section in at one of our antebellum pits, we even have enough original strap rail if we choose to use it.
We also apparently dug through an original road bed recently in process of laying a water line. Timbers and brick piers were intact, no rail though. We also have drawings from an archeological study done about 10 years ago in the depot building if anyone is interested...I could post JPEGs of the drawings
I wonder, Rudd, whether the antebellum rail was strap, bridge, or pear shape rail at that time?
Dave
The late Peter Lear of Colebrook, NH built almost 1/4 mile of 2 foot gage track using mostly strap-iron rail on untreated 2x4 stock during the 1980's. Small steel or iron rail was hard to find. When we dismantled the line in 1993, some of the "rail" on one curve was badly rotten but held long enough to push the rolling stock over it and onto the trucks.
A small piece of this rail was taken back with the equipment to B&W's shops and is now displayed.
