Sad news that the only surviving 50t Vulcan D/E Switcher (s/n 4529) was scrapped this year in Indiana. RIP 1944 - 2024

If you know of any homeless and unwanted Vulcan Gasoline or Diesel Locomotives, please let us know before you let them be scrapped.

Rumor is the group in Chehalis, WA has a Vulcan slated to be scrapped if it hasn't been already.

A few folks trying to save a little piece of history. Photos are nice, but having the machine is better.

@nwrailfan
You can name the source for that rumor?

To my knowlwedge nobody within this Chehalis group has the intention to scrap
this all lifetime Washington State engine.

@VulcanIronWorks

I am pretty sure you know that the Pennsylvania Railroad Museum online services
since that year 2024 publishes a lot of Vulcan Factory Photos.

e.g. the scrapped Frick engine 34 pics:

Are you interested in this particular VIW engine or will another (assuming one can be had) suffice?

Are you a tax-exempt organization that can receive donations?

Do you aspire to be one?

Do you know what happened to the unit that sat at the CNJ station in Wilkes Barre and was then moved to RMDI (was I think owned by the Luzerne County Redevelopment Authority under the auspices of something called Vulcan Pride Ltd)

Here it was in 1993, P.D. Custer photo (click to expand).
Is there still any L&ER RR track in place? It was put forward to be a destination for some of the ITM collection when ITM was being liquidated by the county, including possible operations. I am not sure what happened to that idea, but I know TP&W/G&W removed the connection switch, and wanted around $100k to replace it, at roughly the same time, which made it difficult to relocate cars.

As far as I know, this locomotive is now effectively abandoned in the former RMDI shop in the ex-Lehigh Valley roundhouse in Duryea, PA.

Hope this helps,
