One round-end obs from the Tacoma (I think) Andy's Diner is now privately owned, located at the towing company on Snoqualmie Pass, near Lake Kecheelus.

Also, one BN passenger car, which I believe is former Great Northern, which also came from that Andy's Diner is used off and on as vendor space at Country Village in Bothell, WA.

The observation car would be the "Trempealeau Mountain", which was constructed in 1950 by AC&F in Lot #3447, a 36 seat buffet lounge observation with three roomettes serving as dormitory space (there were six total, and five survive today). It was one of two such cars sold to the Andy's Diner operation in 1974. The Tukwila location, where the "Trempealeau Mountain" and "St. Nicholas Mountain" (which is now owned by Eric Hopp) were used, closed in the 1990's (I forget when exactly) and the cars were auctioned off.

The Seattle location, which is no longer Andy's Diner, is made up of a number of heavyweight cars, some of which reportedly came from the Oregon Electric--look closely and you'll notice interurban-style windows. I'd have to do some digging to find out which cars.

The Tukwila location also used GN coach #1128 (P-S, 1947, Lot #6718, Plan #7496), which last I knew was owned by John Holmstrom and located in Ocean City.

Interesting that the "Trempealeau Mountain" is up at Lake Keechelus. I had known that it was still in Washington State, but the private owner had asked for its location to be kept under wraps--apparently he wanted to avoid having vandalism occur. Maybe it's moved since then, or the owner decided to make its location known. Either way, thanks for the info!

As for the car in Bothell, I didn't know about that one and I'm curious to find out more. I had wondered about the other ex-Andy's cars, as I knew my info was incomplete. Again, thanks for the info!

Part Two, which will be coming later, will consist of dining, café, and lounge cars, including all six of the "Mountain" cars.

Part Three will consist of coach and head end cars.

The BN in the late 70s - early 80s converted several sleepers to work service at Como Shops, St. Paul, MN.

The program was ended when they found that they couldn't keep the cars warm or cool enough, they then started buying "out-house on a raft" crew accommodations.

Car is presently stored and used rarely on runs at the Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke VA. Car still belongs to the Roanoke Chapter and is used by Chapter on short caboose and passenger car hops at the museum. Also member of the Roanoke Chapter also owns a GN light Weight Baggage Car and is still in GN MofW paint lettered for Signal Dept. stored in Chapter facility in Roanoke VA.

Here is a surprise for you apparently:
The Minnesota Transportation Museum has been assembling a fleet of GN light and heavyweight cars. A few of the finds you have mentioned would probably have a good home in St. Paul.

The online data software they made is very good, but if Frank and Jeff get the updated version out of beta release, they just may have the best searchable railway database system out there. I hope people working on research projects such as yours would adopt it or something similar.

Thanks, Olin! For some odd reason, it didn't cross my mind to check the BERA PNAERC Hicks-Hakner database! Silly me! The Seattle location of Andy's Diner closed several years ago, and the cars didn't move an inch, as the restaurant property soonafter reopened as the Orient Express.

There is an ex-GN lightweight car converted to a bar in Elbe, WA. I'll see if I can find a number on it anywhere and post a photo, too. Also, although it's heavyweight, there's an ex-GN RPO converted to a pizza place on the same property. I'll take a pic of it as well, just for good measure.

And while we're talking about ex-GN equipment, the Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad owns a mail/baggage/rider car that was used as the depot in Elbe until 2006.

The Minnesota Transportation Museum had shown interest in acquiring the #1195, and a purchasing agreement was reached with the private owner who had purchased the car after Keystone Furniture had gone out of business. The car was still located in the back of the old Keystone property when it was set ablaze on November 11th, 2005. The purchase of the car by MTM became enveloped in a court case, the outcome of which I have no information on. To my knowledge, the fire-damaged #1195 is still located in Aspers, not having moved an inch.

GN #1196 "Port of Vancouver" to Amtrak #3771. Retired and sold to Peter Schultz. To Larry Milsow as #1196 "City of Spokane". Amtrak registration #800362. Based in Spokane, WA. Was recently in Seattle for the AAPRCO 2013 Convention Train to Napa, CA. Painted in GN Green & Orange, with "GREAT NORTHERN" in the letterboard and the addition of the GN Goat Herald in Gold Leaf next to the vestibule. Restored neon sign on the rear of the car reads "THE CITY OF SPOKANE" surrounding the Goat Herald in the center.

GN #1242 "Hidden Lake" to Amtrak #8151 in 1972. Retired and sold to Sierra Western Railroad Company as SW #151 for use on Eureka Southern-North Coast Daylight excursions on the Northwestern Pacific. Painted in SP Daylight colors. After the NWP washouts and end of operations, the #151 was stored in Asti, CA, alongside ex-GN (nee-SLSF) diner "Lake Pepin". Sold to Matt Munson in approx. 2008. Has this car been moved, or is it still in Asti??

GN #1243 "Iceberg Lake" transferred to CB&Q #1243 in 1953. To Amtrak #8152 in 1972. Retired and sold to Bob Moen as CBRX #1243 and moved to Charles City, IA. Relocated to the Mad River & Nickel Plate Historical Society in Bellevue, OH. Was there another owner before Bob acquired this car, and is he still the owner??

GN #1244 "White Pines Lake" sold to Arvid Benson at unknown date and moved to Moorehead, MN. Sold to Ralph Day-Biddeford Station and relocated to Biddeford, ME. Sold to Barry Fromm-Depot Conference Center and relocated to Columbus, OH.

GN #1245 "Whitefish Lake" to Amtrak #8153. Retired and sold to Sierra Western Railroad Company as SW #153. Unlike the #1242 "Hidden Lake", Sierra Western did not repaint the #1245 into SP Daylight colors. Likely used as a parts source for the #1242. After the NWP washouts and end of operations, #153 was stored in Willits, CA. Acquired by the Roots of Motive Power museum in Willits and is now open to the public in near-original condition.

GN #1390 "Glacier View" to Amtrak #9360. Retired and sold to BN as #A24 for executive service. Amtrak registration #800075. To BNSF as #24. Renumbered to #30.

GN #1391 "Ocean View" to Amtrak #9361. Converted to head end power (HEP) as #9300 and assigned to the Auto Train. Reassigned to rotating service in 1996 when the Auto Train was reequipped with the new Superliner II fleet built by Bombardier. Refurbished and renumbered #10031. Still in active Amtrak service. Used on the Adirondack, Pacific Surfliner (the remaining Amfleet/Horizon set), and special runs throughout the course of the year. Was recently sidelined in LA for several months after sustaining damage to one of the three-axle trucks during a switching move in the coach yard. Was repaired in LA, moved to Beech Grove for a short time, and was placed into the regular "Fall Colors" rotation on the Adirondack in upstate New York. Regular "special run" assignments include the Reno Fun Train over Donner Pass and the Leavenworth Snow Train over Stevens Pass.

GN #1392 "Mountain View" to Amtrak #9362. Converted to HEP as #9301 and assigned to the Auto Train. Reassigned to rotating service in 1996. Refurbished and renumbered #10030. Was slated for truck replacement at Beech Grove, but instead it was retired due to budget cuts and sold in 2001 to Henry Hillman-Oregon Rail Corporation for use on the American Orient Express as the "New Orleans". Amtrak registration #800742. Sold to Xanterra. Planned American Railway Explorer name was "Yellowstone". After the ARE project was cancelled, transferred to the Grand Canyon Railway. Refurbished/repainted at Williams and renamed "Grand Canyon".

GN #1393 "Lake View" to Amtrak #9363. Retired and sold to SP. SP wanted the three-axle trucks for business car #141 "Oakland" and scrapped the car! in 1983 at Oakland.

GN #1394 "Prairie View" to Amtrak #9364. Retired at unknown date and stored at Beech Grove for use as a parts source, including the removal of the trucks. Sold to BN in 1993. Sold to Holland America Westours in 1994. Refurbished and renamed as "Deshka", using three-axle trucks from an AT&SF Budd-built business car. Amtrak registration #800606. Sold to Iowa Pacific-San Luis & Rio Grande in 2009. Refurbished and entered regular PV charter service as SLRG #1394 "Prairie View" in GN Empire Builder Green & Orange. Mr. Ed Ellis, the head of Iowa Pacific, has remarked that the reason he decided to paint the #1394 in GN paint instead of IC paint like most of the fleet was because he remembers riding on the #1394 many years ago.

CB&Q #1395 "River View" to Amtrak #9365. Converted to HEP as #9302 and assigned to the Auto Train. Reassigned to rotating service in 1996. Like the #1392 "Mountain View", the #1395 was slated for truck replacement at Beech Grove, but also ended up being retired due to the budget cut and was also sold in 2001 to Henry Hillman-Oregon Rail Corporation for use on the American Orient Express as the "Copper Canyon". Amtrak registration #800743. Sold to Xanterra. After the ARE project was cancelled, transferred to the GCRY along with the #1392. Here is a photo of the ex-GN RPO #229 that is now a pizza place in Elbe, WA, and ex-GN lightweight car #1114 (per a stencil on the frame) that is now a bar.

What I know about GN cars is very limited, but the picture of 1114 would appear to have radio antenna stanchions on the roof and 4 wheel HW trucks under the hood. Was this a lounge or a coach? I would suspect someone has "harvested" the trucks for use elsewhere? Any ideas on the other car with 1114?

The #1114 was one of five 60-seat short-distance coaches constructed by P-S in Lot #6718 to Plan #7495 for the 1947 edition of the Empire Builder. #1110-#1113 were owned by GN and the #1114 was owned by CB&Q. When the GN ordered a second group of new cars for the Builder in 1950 (the Mid-Century edition), the 1947 cars, including #1110-#1114, were transferred to the new Western Star.
