"The Most Valuable Asset of the Reich: A History of the German National Railway Volume 1 & 2, 1933-1945"

How many of you have read this. My guess is zero.

Or can pronounce, or even spell, the author's name?

I have in fact not read volume 1 (which came out in late 2013) which covers 1920 to 1932. Volume 2 has been out since the end of 2014, so I'd expect at least some others will have read it. There is at least one used copy of volume 2 on Amazon for under $20 shipped, if you thought 'cost was an object'.

For anyone who has read volume 1: Does he cover the experiments with sprung track, and the amusing experiment with electric resistance heating of rails to simulate sun kink?

Would either of you gentlemen have a link, or information on buying both volumes that you could post ?? I got nothing but error messages when I tried to search this, and it sounds like an interesting read. Thanks in advance for any assistance you can offer.

I have read most of Mierzejewski's work. I originally obtained my copies from the U. Cincinnati library.

Another interesting read is "The Collapse of the German War Economy, 1944-1945", which concerns a great deal of German railways.

These books are mostly concerned with economics. They investigate how the German railways were a backdoor vehicle for hiding assets from the allies after Versailles.

Thank You, Dr. Harrod.

In case you're still interested:

The ISBN for volume 1 is 978-1-4696-1383-3

To clarify, Professor Mierzejewsky is also the author of 'The Collapse of the German War Economy' that was mentioned.

I had no trouble pulling up the Amazon page for volume 2. You have to go to 'other sellers' to find the lowest prices + shipping; I believe as of this date in March 2024 the copy from Thriftbooks is cheapest.

Google Books notes that DR was "the largest enterprise in the capitalist world between 1920 and 1945"...

Wages of Destruction goes into the German Economy before & during WW2 including their rail network. If you weren't convinced before, this will show you there was no real way for them to win,

I would think a more interesting subject would be the train crews who worked the trains taking victims to concentration and extermination camps. I've seen very little on that aspect of the holocaust. Be it voluntarily or forced work, it must have been horrific mental anguish and extreme guilt to know your "passengers" were facing probable death once they arrived at their destination.

If you want the truth, just ask me in private, because you do not know the truth about any of that, ANY OF IT!
