Wonder if she'll be assigned to passenger excursions or used in freight service? I imagine Doyle has a clause in the agreement to keep her in NKP colors.

If we can't get big steam, we can get an "honorary steam locomotive".

Smart move on Doyle's part to place his beloved locomotive in the best of hands at this time of life. Now he has a say in what will happen to part of his legacy.

According to the Railfan & Railroad Magazine article "it will lead excursions in Northeastern Pennsylvania, including on former D&H trackage operated by DL."

This bears repeating. For those who aren't familiar with the 190, it was privately owned.

Making the move now allows him to have a say in the locomotive's future. No sitting around rotting away while the family and caretakers debate over what will become of it.

A note on context -

NKP 190 has spent the winter outdoors under a tarp, to free up space inside the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry's engine house for two recently arrived steam locomotives - a reported here:

It never occurred to me that Doyle would sell this project, so close to getting it running.
But then again, the man isn't getting any younger and it takes up a lot of room in a finite area.

OMSI doesn't have a connection to the enginehouse, that's built/owned/operated by another group.

It's very easy to assume that it's part of OMSI as it's very close to their parking lot.
I bet lots of people visiting the area just assume it's part of that museum.
FYI, for anyone coming into the area to see the enginehouse, don't miss OMSI if you can, it's a really neat museum with all kinds of non-RR-related things, including one of the US Navy's last non-nuclear subs!

DL&W and NKP had a joint through line passenger service between New York (Hoboken) and Chicago. There were six Pullmans (10-6) in the pool, covering two through services with three cars from each road in each service.

[It took Erie and DL&W-NKP three cars to protect a NY-CHI service while PRR and NYC could do NY-CHI and back with two cars, one each way; B&O also needed three cars but their market was WAS-CHI]

Engines did not run through; DL&W power worked HOB-BUF and NKP power BUF-CHI.

Seems like it has been on the verge of being operational but for some wiring for years now. Anyone familiar with what the status really is? It’s great that it will be in good Alco-phile hands but the timing seems odd if it really was so close. Is the 12-251 okay? A problem with the one they put in would be a great motivation to send it where there is great familiarity with them and they’d have spares if need be.

I live around five miles away from the Oregon Rail Heritage Foundation, several years ago a museum volunteer told me that the main problem was that the last time they started the PA an oil line blew and sprayed lube oil all over everything in the engine compartment. I asked about the traction motor cables that were stolen fifteen or so years ago and was told they had been replaced.
