The end is in sight (several years out, of course) for the 1950's-era Budd-built equipment still in active daily use north of the border. This represents the last large/fleet retirement of "heritage" equipment in North America, and therefore the end of an era for the postwar lightweight streamliners.

Article on VIA plans from "Trains": https://www.trains.com/trn/news-reviews/news-wire/via-joins-amtrak-in-attempting-to-replace-aging-passenger-cars/

Included in this of course will be the 2 types of domes built as part of the larger Canadian order for CP. I understand that modifications done to the Park-series dome observations several years ago by VIA may have inadvertently caused some structural damage to the cars*, but this of course would not preclude at least some preservation effort for these. (Yes, several examples are already in museums or privately owned, having been retired by VIA earlier on.)

(Comments on the actual extent of the current structural issues with the Park domes would be welcome.)

*Due to this, recently VIA has been operating the Canadian with a buffer car at the rear of the consist directly behind the Park car.

Earlier Amtrak article from "Trains": https://www.trains.com/trn/news-reviews/news-wire/amtrak-seeks-carbuilder-interest-in-new-long-distance-fleet-analysis/

As an aside, as far as Amtrak is concerned, the phasing in of the eventual new long-distance equipment will also open the door to possibilities for preservation of the current Superliner I/II fleet. And therefore conversation on which cars represent the most significant examples thereof, such as the last car to ever roll out of the Pullman plant, Superliner I sleeper #32009 George M. Pullman (yes, #32009 referencing #9, the first sleeper ever [re]built by Pullman, way back in 1859).
