Post subject:  EMD 567C Technical Question - Cylinder Heads

Question received this week: What later (645 series) EMD cylinder heads can be used on 567C engines?

Answer: All EMD 645-era heads from Circle 2 design through Diamond 6 type are "reverse flow" cooling path heads, having very similar flow characteristics, and can be used in matched or mixed sets in place of complete sets of original cylinder heads in 567C and 567D engines. Circle 3 and later are considered to exceed 567 application requirements. It is generally not recommended to mix Circle 2 and later heads (the "reverse flow" types) with Circle 1 and earlier unnumbered heads in the same 567C or 567D engine due to possible differences in coolant flow distribution.

EMD 710 heads are identical in flow characteristics to corresponding 645 series heads, but have a different injector locator stud locator hole arrangement.

Additional Note: EMD no longer recommends using Circle 2 heads on 645 engines, they suggest saving them for use on 567C and 567D engines.

Reference: EMD Service Department Training Instructor parts interchangeability notes. Summarized for ARM Conference in 2007.
