Wisconsin Central had two classes of 4-6-0's, and one class each of 2-8-0's and 4-4-2's, all built by Brooks between 1898 and 1907, which later went to the Soo Line. The Soo itself had a class of light Pacifics built by Alco after it had absorbed Brooks. The Northern Pacific also had some 4-6-0's with piston valves inside the frames.

With the general adoption of piston valves it looked like a good idea, simplifying the connection to the valve gear also located between the frames. The general movement to 'outside' valve motion just a decade later killed the trend
