Now that this locomotive is back in California since more than a month I stumbled
on this 1950s pic below.

It was original made as 2-6-2T Weed Lumber #4 in 1907, shortly after they added a
4-wheel cistern/tender to make it a 2-6-2T+T and in the Long-Bell era they removed
the side tanks and added this slope back tender.

Since I see that lokie long time ago I was sure the tender come from #7 or #8 which
where made with tenders like this.
Now in this 1950s photo you can see #7, #4, #8 and #1001 and all three double ender
2-6-2 have slope back tenders.

Any idea where #4 tender came from?
New order from Baldwin, second hand or the tender from Longview, Portland & Northern 70?

Baldwin Extra Order 18293, dated 26 April 1920, covered a tender frame and some other parts to be shipped with Weed Lumber #8.

Thank you Jeff. You are the best.
Wow that is early...I excpected the change much later. Again thanks.

Hope Chris can put it back to operation sometimes like he did for
Black Hills & Northwestern #7 and Columbia River Belt Line #Skookum.
But who knows what his priority list is...so much more in his collection.

You're welcome.

In addition to the extra order from the 1920 volume of Extra Orders on the SMU website, the following also appears on the Specification Sheets for the Weed 3/4:

"For hereafter-Buffer plats between engine and tender to conform to Ry. Co. print (not numbered) received December 1, 1920 and filed in drawing room vault".

1920 actually makes a lot of sense, as in late 1918/early 1919 Weed Lumber had purchased from the McCloud River Lumber Company the 70,920 acres McCloud owned north of the Medicine Lake Highlands volcano, including the location of Tennant. That sale and the long-term operational stability it provided is what allowed Weed to go purchase the 7 and 8, plus justified converting the 3 and 4 from tank to tender engines, especially as the logging railroad built into these newly acquired holdings snaked ever farther eastward from the SP main line connection.
