Post subject:  D&H Roundhouse in Oneonta, NY

Once the largest roundhouse in the world. Most of it was taken down at the end of steam, remainder demolished shortly before this picture was taken.

Things to look for: it was a full ciricle, and a rectangle shaped area between the 9 and 12 o'clock positions of the circle, that was the machine shop. There is also the long shadow of the smoke stack from the former power plant at the bottom right, and a coaling plant casts its shadow the left middle.

And the Carbondale Roundhouse, looks like it was still standing in this picture, taken 10 years ago.

I have a brick from both sites....

And if you click this link just east of the D&H yard, the empty lot was the site of the original D&H gravity RR shops from the 1820's, which were torn down about 12 years ago.!
