I thought Bradshaw's basic plan for the D&S run it as a profit loss most years. This gave him a place to place the profits from his citrus operations. Given how many for profit businesses never make money they are really good at being non profit businesses.

The Green Bay Packers are a non-profit. They do everything the 31 other for profit teams in the NFL do - from selling seats and hot dogs to sharing in the television revenues and they compete with them, literally. I believe their "profit" is over $50 million annually. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Tennessee is also a non-profit with a "profit" of over $500 million annually. It competes with every for profit health insurer. This stuff can be full of surprises.
