Primarily to reduce smoke and eliminate ash. Our Hollidaysburg (PA) yard adjoins commercial, residential and public recreation areas. We also found coal quality to be very inconsistent lately.

Our engine no. 11 was constructed as an oil burner for export to Cuba and was subsequently converted to coal by Alco for domestic sale.

There are active coal mines and coal companies in Clearfield County,PA that are located on rail. These firms sell steam (thermal) and MET coal to most anyone who is in the market for coal. Now I don't know the logistics or possibility of buying individual railcars of coal as most of these load unit trains of 100 or more cars at a time. Any of them would sell most any quantity of trucked coal if folks would be interested in purchasing that way. I haven't seen individual or any less than 50 railcars being moved in years. Might still be possible, the firms I know of are on RJ Corman and I believe B&P lines ( I have no affiliation)
