Here’s your answer from the Hicks Car Works blog.

https://hickscarworks.blogspot.com/2021 ... r.html?m=1

“Roger Kramer shares these pictures with us of the John Greenleaf Whittier, a Pullman heavyweight car that he has purchased. It is currently located in Alamosa, Colorado, and he will be donating it to IRM as soon as it can be made ready for shipment, along with an ex-C&NW E unit.”

Yes. What does it matter? It's being preserved. Maybe IRM is waiting to make a formal press release for a reason. Be patient.

It's tough being Railfan Disney World.

It's a hard life, but someone has to do it.

There are many people trying to (or at least sounding like they're trying to) "rescue" equipment from the Iowa Pacific debacle.

It would be nice to learn anything useful from what appears to be one successful effort. Isn't that what we're about in this forum, learning from success stories?

Was this just "bring a certified check with enough zeroes"? (Lesson: Befriend rich people?) Or were there negotiations involved? (Lessons: TBD.....)

As a potentially fathomable scenario, suppose an owner far away didn't have the money to get their equipment home even though they had clear rights to do so under written agreements, and someone else stepped in and said "I'll pay to save it if you turn over title to me so I can donate it."

Don't laugh. Look at how U.S. Sugar got coaches that belonged to URHS in New Jersey.

I just wonder how many of you folks that post on these interchanges ever have owned or moved a piece of equipment? It takes a lot of effort, determination and focusing to get it done. The men and women that have purchased and saved equipment over the many years are always amazed at comments here. How many of you have ever heard of an umler tag, how it works, where to get one and all the information that must be provided before you can even consider rr shipment? Not many, I bet. The regulations to move equipment on the railroads are difficult and they should be. Its FRA regulations, RR regulations, and state regulations. It is not easy!
As for Mr Ed Ellis...he is not always the bad guy. Sure he is not the best business man but he did save the equipment for other folks....like me. It was a central clearing house, a used car lot of railroad equipment and the bankruptcy court as the clearing house.
A lot of organizations are going to benefit from his mistakes. I am happy that I had the opportunity to purchased two pieces from the court and donate them to IRM.
Thanks Roger W. Kramer owner of EX CNW E8 515 and ex employee of the CNWRR.

For the record, not only have I done both, I've managed to "repossess" a railroad passenger car, on behalf of a paying client, and escort it across five states, enduring and preventing Class One incompetence the whole way, before the lessor found out. (He called the owner just as the car was being switched back into the sidings of the owner.)

It's a VERY effective strategy, the only trouble is finding rich people that want to be befriended. :).

Christmas has finally arrived again at IRM with the setout on our interchange of EX CNW E8, 515. It arrived via the UP RR in the early, early morning of December 5, 2021. Already our mechanical department has inspected it and made a number of recommendations and observations concerning its future operating condition. First of all, my sincere thanks to the following railroads for their timely and safe movement of my diesel. The Grenada RR, the Canadian National RR, and finally the Union Pacific RR all of which successfully moved the 515 during their busy operations. Again to thank the bankruptcy lawyers and the court for this opportunity granted to me to purchase and save this historic diesel locomotive. Lastly, thanks to the Illinois Railway Museum BOD and its membership for the trust to under take this project! Now to those folks/fans who would like to help contribute to the future the the 515. Let me say that the project is not cheap. Your donations will help preserve this locomotive. Please consider sending your funds to IRM, 7000 Olsen Road, Union, Il 60180: and direct it to the Restricted Fund, CNW 515! I would like to see enough funds raised to house the engine in our next large storage barn construction. The amount would range from $16,000 to 19,000 depending upon construction costs. Thanks again for everyone's support!

Hello David
I have devoted all my spare time arranging shipment of the 515. I will now switch my attention to the shipment of the 12-1 Pullman sleeper John Greenleaf Whittier. For all you Heavyweight Pullman sleeper fans please seriously consider sending in a donation to Irm regarding the Restricted Fund....JGW; thanks.
FYI 2022 IRM just might be able to operate a large 1940s era Pullman sleeper consist behind our Frisco 1630. Stay tuned!! Roger Kramer

Was this unit actually owned by the IOU Pacific, or was it a leased unit from some other organization? There's plenty of rolling stock out there that got stranded and can't make it home for various reasons. While I'm glad IRM got this, and can't think of a better home, I'm also hoping that some other organization didn't suffer the loss of this unit.
