I'm in the process of aquiring an old REA-style baggage cart and I need information to help in its restoration...
There is little hope of determining its original ownership. There were several express companies in operation in the earlier part of this century. Also, many railroads owned identical wagons.
I'm interested in painting it in the familiar red and green color scheme of REA. There were several other owners who used very similar colors. Does anyone have suggestions for the proper paint colors from a modern manufacturer?
Also I'm going to have to do some major work replacing much of the wood in the wagon's structure. What kind of wood should I use?
Thanks,
-Jeff Ford

I don't have any firsthand knowledge on baggage carts but horse drawn vehicles generally used oak for axles and running gear and poplar for body panels, sides, etc. (light but strong) Farm wagons sometimes used yellow pine T&G for the floor, also strong and more water resistant. Any stakes would probably be oak Side note, I seem to remember when REA quit they were selling used carts at $25 ea. in good condition. Don't we wish?
