An interesting acquisition, obviously from the former Modoc railroad academy, originally MKT, intended for improved handicapped access. "The railroad wanted to provide handicapped access to its rail experience without altering its historic rail cars, according to railroad president David Williamson. Rail cars sit high, and access requires stepping high and then on to a series of tall steps. The rail company purchased a transfer caboose because it is uniquely designed and can easily be fitted with a ramp or lift."

Reports are that this was originally MKT 73, once part of a stash in Antelope, Ca. before being used by the Modoc Railroad Academy; it was picked up from the Crab Orchard & Egyptian in Illinois, according to the trucking company.

Unfortunately, if the history of certain ADA litigants in the region is any indication, this will get condemned and dismissed as "shoving wheelchair users into a boxcar shed on a flatcar." They'd better make darned sure that thing is "tarted up nice" inside.......... <:-/

I'm sure it is a challenge to explain why preserved equipment can't meet the accessibility standards of public transportation (and aren't required to). Another option is a coach/baggage combine with the baggage door for access but those are getting hard to find. This car has potential I think even if it isn't used for handicapped access. One thing I notice is there is no way to move between this car and other cars, so it couldn't be used to load a person who then transfers to a coach. R Spencer photo, 5/2000.

The caboose will be a great addition to the Stewartstown Railroad. Dave has been looking for a transfer caboose for a while.

What happened to the Modoc Academy to cause them to close? For a while they were advertising heavily everywhere.
