In 1947, for use on the streamlined Texas Chief which commenced service in 1948, ATSF ordered three cars from Budd with central partition dividers and vestibule doors at each end, for compliance with Texas Jim Crow laws.

Some years ago I had an article published about the subject generally, "Curtains for Jim Crow - Law, Race and the Texas Railroads". A copy can be found at www.texascompound.com under "publications".

These cars apparently went to Penn Central in 1970. If one of them survives, I would like to see about preserving it, if it could be bought. I fear they may have all been scrapped, but if any reader of this should know to the contrary, I would be thankful to hear of it.

I'm not a walking expert on ATSF passenger rolling stock, but I know one or two.

Get me the ATSF numbers and I'll see what I can find.

According to Wayner, the three cars, ATSF 3187-3189, were built by Pullman-Standard in August-September 1947.

ATSF 3187-3189 became PC 2460-2462 in September 1970. I believe NJDOT funded the acquisition.

They would have flowed to NJDOT, then to NJT when ConRail and NJT came in, same numbers.

Somebody with NJT's passenger car disposal information has to take it from here.
