Greetings all:

I'm with the N&W Historical Society, who, as many of you all already know has a vast amount of historical material available (over 192,000 items to date). One thing we do not have and there seems to be no evidence that such existed is a detailed N&W drawing of the 10 inch lettering as used on large N&W steam power. We do not believe the railroad actually did such a drawing, as many of us have searched and there is zero reference to such. This lettering with only spacing changes was also used on the as delivered GP9s

Which leads to my question.

Does anyone have a contact within EMD?

We have an EMD drawing number on the styling and painting drawing that references an EMD drawing, No. 8229769 for the letters

This is the first drawing, a later drawing referencing the normal 10 inch letters that are standard to N&W diesels through 1970 has a totally different EMD drawing number, and we do have the N&W drawing for that.

While several of us have already created the letters for stenciling purposes, we always have had that tiny bit of doubt, as our research on the 8 inch tender lettering has shown that the sizes listed on the drawing vary some on the actual stencils. Having that drawing may put our questions to rest.

Any assistance on this would be greatly appreciated

Ken Miller
