Hello,

I’ve been watching from the sidelines for quite some time, but wanted to jump in and let everyone know that I have a new website dedicated to my railway photography and also the Conrail OCS train. If you have any interest in the train, feel free to check it out. I’m trying to capture the history of the cars and provide an opportunity for those that rode or worked on the train to tell their stories.

I am adding one new car/E8A each weekend.

Well, there was a time (late 1980's, probably 1987-1988) when my Father was the most senior Conrail Engineer out of Buffalo NY to Selkirk NY. He regularly held down TV-9 and TV-10 (hottest trains on that line at the time).

One time they attached the Conrail OCS (sans engines) to the hind end of his TV train between Buffalo and Selkirk... Think of half a dozen 100 ton OCS heavyweight cars at the end of fairly lightweight TV train (this was before the really heavy Double Stack Monsters of today).

Dad made a safe trip out of it, at the end his good friend and Conductor on the trip asked the "Head Honchos" how was the ride ? The "Head Honcho" replied "well you slowed down a little too soon a couple of times along the way..." The Conductors reply; "Well, better too soon than too late".

Between my dad and the conductor they had about 90 years of RR experience combined.

Great story! I have definitely seen those cars on freight trains before. Those 30KW generators must have had a good workout.

The former Southern Railway heavyweights, CR 1 and CR 4 weighed over 210,000 lbs each. Still not as heavy as former Santa Fe Geometry Car CR 21. It weighted in at over 265,000 lbs.

My "Old Man" (engineer) had a distain for "Grandstanding". He told me any damn fool can put on a show tearing down the track but eventually you have to get the show stopped!
