Looking to learn the name of BN MofW Bunk Car #968117, a pre-war Budd Chair Coach.

I cannot find a roster with that level of BN MofW detail.

Any help appreciated. Thank you.

I have it listed as CB&Q # 4713 "SILVER FOREST". 1974 (April) to WS # 968117, then 1984 (Sept) retired, assumed scrapped. Does this car still exist or was it scrapped?

Silver Forest still exists at Gopher State Railroad Museum along with Silver Crest:

GSRM has struggled with vandalism at the off-site storage facility where Silver Forest and other equipment is located, and lacks the resources to bring the two Silver cars, an ex-NP Alco S4 etc. to their museum site, which they own, despite running fundraisers. They are currently trying to raise money to move another S4, this one ex-B&M and in running condition, that they were donated from its last owner in MN. There was daydreaming on here a few years back about setting up some sort of low cost moving operation to be shared among various museums, GSRM would certainly benefit.

Gopher State's website lists a post office address in New Prague, Minnesota and they mention working with a local annual event in New Prague, but I'm not sure that that is where their museum site is located. New Prague is located south, and a bit west, of the Twin Cities. Can you confirm that is where their site is located? Thanks.

They are located just north of New Prague, next to the UP railroad.

The mill in New Prague that is the reason for the UP line has just closed.

Les, yes as HudsonL notes it is.

Ah that stinks, it is a former M&StL line. Would be a good place for GSRM to run, rather than the circle of track they put down to operate an ex-CB&Q SW1 on, but buying track requires resources.

Checking the GSRM's website, and looking at an entry in an old OFFICIAL GUIDE, it appears that the ex-CB&Q "Silver Crest" and "Silver Forest" are located on a siding in Montgomery, Minnesota on the ex-M&StL line that goes north up into New Prague. According to the OG, it appears that it's about 7 and a half miles between Montgomery and New Prague. I'm not sure how far north of New Prague the museum's property is located, but it might make sense for the museum to at least contact Le Sueur County officials to see if there might be some way that the county could help the museum acquire those 7-1/2 miles of track, or at least some smaller portion of it. I'm not sure what kind of a policy Union Pacific has toward railroad museums acquiring out-of-service trackage, but it might make sense for Gopher State to contact the U.P. at this point.

Les, you are absolutely right, hopefully GSRM is thinking the same thing and will make a pitch to the county, it could be a win for both the museum and keeping the line open for future freight service.

As for saving the line for possible future freight service, I'm not sure of the mileage between the end of track at Montgomery and the connection with the Union Pacific main line that ends up in the Twin Cities. Nor do I know if there is any other business still existing on the line north of New Prague and that above mentioned U.P. connection. It appears that the ex-M&StL depot in New Prague may still exist. GSRM apparently DOES have some type of a depot at its museum site, but I'm not sure whether that is the depot from New Prague, or from elsewhere, or if it is even a genuine railroad depot.

Les here is a photo of the depot from 2018. It is possible the mill will be resold, it makes Robin Hood Flour which has changed hands a number of times. I have seen reports that there is a good Czech restaurants in New Prague, so there is a tourist draw. Dave Mikelson photo.

Thanks for the photo. That's a pretty good sized wood combination depot! Looks like the U.P. was using it back in 2018 for track maintenance crews. Appeared to be in excellent condition. Also appreciate the info on the flour mill located there in New Prague. Let's hope that the museum already has a dialogue going with the Union Pacific.

Here is a story I found on the M&StL closed facebook group about how the depot came to be painted around 1995 or so: "I was working this job when the depot was repainted. A preservation group from New Prague got permission from the CNW, which had painted it battleship gray, to restore the depot to it's original colors. They interviewed the conductor, Tom Shriver, who was a M&StL veteran as to the original colors to which he replied "dark green...if it was wood, the Louie painted it dark green". Not satisfied with that answer, volunteers showed up to scrape off the paint layers to see for themselves. Still not satisfied, they created their own paint scheme of different shades of green, and had the Scott County Dept. of Corrections send over a bus load of inmates to do the painting." Chad Peterson photo.

Thanks for the very interesting story, and the wonderful photo.

I've seen some color photos of the Louie's all-green depots, and I think it's more of a medium green. But individual crews might have leaned toward a darker hue. My guess is that this was an "austerity" paint scheme, to replace some type of a two-tone scheme to save the M&StL both time and money. Not sure what the original scheme might have been. Whatever the story, the folks there that decided on the New Prague's two shades of green for the depot, sure came up with a nice looking repaint!
