If you mean the line above the Southern Pacific Lines lettering I believe that is actually a handrail, some early switchers had that style rather than a rail on stanchions on the outside of the gangway. I'm not sure what the museum is going for with their stripe.

No, it's not just the handrail. There is definitely a line about the railroad name, but below the handrail. You can see the shadow cast by the handrail below the line. The line appears to be a continuation of the line below the window of the cab.

I don't speak for them, but.....

.... I'm 99% certain that was just a coat of cheap black over the white and top black to cover up the red and previous owner's name. Note the white stripe is the same before and after.

Please don't consider that a final paint job by any means.

Sounds like the perfect opportunity to volunteer your time and paint to make it correct then, right?

Cute rejoinder, but right now the equipment in question is not in a position--physically or logistically--for a repaint.

Long story short, there have been MAJOR problems with the property location originally selected and acquired for the museum grounds--to the extent that finding another location, in Williams or elsewhere, may end up being the feasible move. (My veiled understanding is that the Army Corps of Engineers essentially declared the property "unusable" after its acquisition by the Museum Foundation.)

according the white stripe.
The was my first quick thought too -> that is the old Ideal 1 stripe...
But no it is not. The Ideal 1 stripe is above the motor door hinges.
The new one is below the motor door hinges.
It is about 10 inches wide and much too low. It should be 1 inch wide running around the
locomotive just beneath the side windows and above the radiator.
For masking a future lettering it is to high and to small. The lettering should be 12 inches
tall centered between the top and central door hinges.

Sad to hear the project is in limbo...
But be honest I am not surprised. From my far away recognition that whole thing is more a
wishfull thinking one man show. Last time I was at Williams, AZ is 19 or 20 years ago and
my info about hat museum is only internet based. So maybe I am wrong about this.

But (un)fortunately I live right now in Thailand* 8484 miles away from Williams, AZ.
*(Thailand a land with 70+ million people the land who had the first case outside China
on 13 January. At all 3320 cases with 58 death in 7 month. No community spread for 105
days right now. That is mitigation!)
I am not leaving that "safe harbor" for a "hot spot" right now. So in a year maybe two I
can come and help.
If they allow me to volunteer arriving with my black and white paint buckets...
That NW-2 would be my second job. I would start to paint the Shay correctly.

The paintscheme there is similar to what Southern Pacific #1006 at SCRM (formerly Orange Empire) is painted in. Here's a photo of it from last year about a month after it was turned over to operations.

The darker areas are gloss-black, and the lettering and pinstripe are a metallic-ish silver color. 1006 doesn't have the logo decal but it looks like the full-color Southern Pacific drumhead logo. There might also be some difference in the specification text such as the way the fractions are stacked. I'll look for some better photos to confirm.

The cab interior also painted in a darker gloss-green (I think it's called "bottle green" or "glass green"?) and there's also some varnished wood trim in there as well from what I recall.

I'd suggest reaching out to the SCRM Diesel Service department for more information. Although the paintscheme was contracted out, they definitely know more than I do about the exact specifications.

SP 1006 is displayed in its as delivered configuration.

The Southern California (Orange Empire) Ry Museum also obtained a photo of the unit in Bakersfield as it was being delivered

That new Arizona State Railroad Museum sure is a busy place these days. First a Shay steam locomotive and now a Diesel.

the name XXX State Museum usually means that it is State sponsored such as the Nevada State Railroad Museum.

Does anyone know about this?

That's the usual practice, but that's just their name. The State of Arizona does not sponsor any museums or preservation groups other than the Arizona Historical Society.
