"Such a sickening thing to walk into this morning at the museum. More than 30 windows in historic buildings, cabooses, passenger cars, locomotives, and display cars were damaged. It’s going to cost thousands of dollars to replace all of the glass. Time to review camera footage... "

Man, that sucks for them. I'm glad they have cameras, though. Hopefully they'll be able to identify the perpetrators.

Also, anyone want to hedge bets on how long until somebody here suggests that this would have been better settled with a shotgun?

They reported on Facebook that it was a group of young kids.

This is really sickening, and infuriating. Hopefully if local law enforcement hasn't been "de-funded", the vandals can be apprehended and their parents (if the persons are under-age) made to pay restitution. Replacing windows is a very expensive, time-consuming process.

Surprisingly, I think on average this type of vandalism can be more common in small-town America than the big cities.

The police will likely take care of this like they take care of other such acts because that's not what "defunding" the police affects.

Depends how seriously the police take it. With a criminal case you can force restitution, but odds are the people who did it have no money to take unless they get a job.

You know, I can't remember ever seeing a case like this where the museum got covered for all of the cost and time involved. I know that many years ago we had windows broken just before we kicked off our season, losing a car's revenue for quite some time. The parents, who arrived at court in a new and expensive truck, claimed poverty. An offer was made to take the truck. Some money was obtained, but it didn't cover the lost time and revenues.

Can anyone cite a successful full recovery from a case like this? What was done to get it?

More than a decade ago, I chartered a special train at the Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum to help them raise some funds (I've done this at a fairly large number of operations across the country), and it sickens me to see money that a group has worked so hard to raise get wasted by acts like these.

On July 31, 2020 the North Judson Police Department responded to the Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum for reports of theft and vandalism. The North Judson Police Department reviewed camera footage and within 24 hours were able to successfully identify four juveniles. Investigations conclude that the four juveniles partook on a two day crime spree which included theft and breaking more than 30 windows from the historic rail car museum. The officers of North Judson Police Department worked hard and diligently to successfully identify the subjects involved in this case. A police report has been submitted to the Starke County Prosecutor’s office for official review. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Sadly, as juveniles they will most likely walk away with a mere slap on the wrist. The NYC 0-6-0 in Utica that got severely damaged by an act of vandalism (a covered hopper turned loose) comes to mind here.
